Here is what's happening:

1. 13" Macbook Pro early 2015
2. Last night I updated Monterey to 12.6.6
3. This morning I had a message on my screen saying "Mail needs to import your messages." (see photo).
4. So I clicked to do it and there are over 1M messages.
5. This import got stuck on Gmail Drafts .. which would be an empty folder.
6. I stopped the process as it said it would take 36 hours and I needed to use my computer.
7. When I check my storage, it shows mail is there (see photo)

Does anyone know what is going on and if there is a way to get things back to normal?

Many thanks! I am an "old lady" and this is freaking me out!

EDIT: I started it over and as before, it is stuck. it has been on 9822 for a while now for an empty folder. Here is a screen shot of it.

EDIT 2: So it said 79 hours to complete and I left for a few minutes.l I came back and there was a notification of an email and my email app was sitting there opened! I don't know what happened but it seems to have fixed itself somehow!
