This is definitely bad advice.

OP, make an appointment. Be honest when you get there and see what happens.

Op, remember that society dictates what is honest and what isn't. Kick society in the balls and do whatever the hell you think is right.

Just tell them you recieved a laundered iPhone, and you demand they replace it immediately with a legit one!

I don't know about him, but I have never tried to weasel out of a speeding ticket. Own up to mistakes it makes you a better person.

Agreed. Sorry about your misfortune OP, but I think your phone is dead. Like someone else said, Apple should replace it for $200.

i dont remember what its called but there's some sand or powder u put electronic devices in after they got wet. it absorbs the water and dries ur device out

yes you have applecare but it won't help in this case. its gonna cost you the 200 or maybe even 400 to replace it.
I don't think the issue was whether or not Applecare would replace the phone for free, but whether they would do the $199 Out Of Warranty replacement via phone/mail rather than having him drive to an Apple Store to do it. It's certainly worth a try, I would think.

Why does everyone always expect Apple to perform customer-service miracles? Your partner screwed-up and damaged a product that was previously functioning properly. If he ran over your new bike with his truck, would you expect CCM to give you a new bike at a discounted price? If he drank your last can of Diet Pepsi, would you expect Pepsi to replace it? If he finished your crossword puzzle before you had a chance to look at it, would you expect the newspaper to drop-off another copy? Come on, let's be reasonable! Sometimes sh*t happens and sometimes expensive items are damaged. That's why my Mastercard has Purchase Protection (although I've never used it.) Sorry about your luck, now go buy a new iPhone and get on with your life.

As long as you put a white phone in with the whites, or a black phone in with the colors, you should be ok. :D

Where was anyone expecting a customer-service miracle? He just wanted a way to get the standard $199 replacement without having to physically go to an Apple store.

Apple should provide a replacement iPhone in ths case as the OP should have been warned by the device prior to his pants being loaded in to the washing machine, this is obviously a flaw in the design process, the iPhone should be capable of immitting an audible alert or at the very least completing a call to the owner with a message warning of the impending doom of the device.

That's what the washing machine detector does. It flashes and has a warning stating "Please Pay $200 for a New iPhone."

Update

Hey people.. Here is what is going on. So after two days keeping my iphone in bag with rice, today it finally turned on for about 3 minutes. I could use the phone but after that time it just turned off on its own. There is also a big “stain” on the display. It kinda look now like 3D objects. Phone can be only turned on with power adapter. Anyhow, I did call Apple on monday and got two options:

FIRST OPTION: they send me an empty box overnight, I put my washed iphone inside and send it back to them. They charge my credit card for $199+tax and send me back a new iphone in 6 business days. I told them up front that this phone was washed in machine so I KNOW ABOUT VOIDED WARRANTY ECT...

SECOND OPTION: they send me a new iphone overnight. They charge my credit card for $199+tax and $29+tax processing fee, and put $599 on hold. I get the new iphone, then I put my washed iphone in the same box and send it back. I have only 10 calendar days to do it, other way they will charge this time my cc with $599 as a signal for them that I decided to keep my old broken iphone. Now with that option I can purchase first Apple Care Protection Program ($69+tax) and the $29+tax fee will be waved..

So I decided to go with option number 2.

Now the problems started on Monday when the guy I called at Apple tried to process my order... Apple computer system just gave up on them that day and he couldn’t finished my order. After about 40 minutes on phone he told me to call them later !!! I couldn’t do it so I did it today (tuesday). I did not have my case number with me at this time, as well as a serial number of my iphone so the lady couldn’t do nothing about it... She also couldn’t find any info thru my name and address besides that I am customer but it doesn’t show that I have iPhone. We then set phone appointment and she was going to call me around 9:15 pm.. well it did not happen. She called at 10:20 pm and this time I gave her my case number and she found info about my case. Well I am thinking this time finally I can be done with it.. well guess what.. nope, again the system doesn’t let her do anything.. we were on phone for about 1 hr.. I got transfered to other lady.. what a nightmare.. Finally she gave me a direct contact to her (extension number).. gave me a new case number and told me to call next day again and leave message. I am proud of myself that I was so CALM at this point.. Anyhow.. my main concern was to make sure the next iphone will be BRAND NEW.. well they can not promise that. They all told me that they are about 90% sure it will be a BRAND NEW one, since iphone 3gs are so fresh that there are not to many to be refurbished yet..

It almost want me, to pressure them, to make sure it will be a brand new one, for all the phone calls and waiting time I had to make and go thru. After all I am paying another $200 +tax and kinda would like to see it to be brand new. Anyway, thats my story.. We will see what next.

Go ahead and try to pressure them. See where that gets you.

You washed your iPhone 3GS along with your pants in the laundry. Get whatever replacement you can for it and count your blessings.

You're only paying $199 + tax for a replacement iPhone that you damaged. It's most likely going to be a refurbished one, seeing as how it's a replacement for the one you messed up. A refurbished one is more or less as good as a brand new one, so take what you can get.

got the phone

Update.

So finally of wednesday I talked to someone from Apple who decided to be more helpful than anyone else.. Of course there was a system problem again and I spent about hour on phone with them... but after all this person was very nice and decided to help me. I called them around 3 pm.. and the very next day around 9:30 am I had a FedEx guy with package at my door (California to Indiana shipping). Inside were two boxes, one with a new iPhone (or at least something what looks like almost new iPhone - did not find any damage or use of that phone)...and the other box (white one) empty, to be send back to Apple with my old phone.

Interesting thing is that I could use my old phone only if it is connected to power source like power adapter or MacBook, it actually worked pretty well. There was only one SMALL/BIG problem.. the sound speaker was damaged - quality of sound went really down after the water damage, as well as the volume of the sound went down.. Also both water sensors were dark pink.

Anyhow, I am sending it back to Apple so they can charge me $200 for the new one and let the $600 go back to my credit card (for the old one).

Now I am just hoping the new phone won't have any problems besides me (OR most likely my partner) screwing it up with water again ;)

I'm glad it worked out in the end, and it's good to hear the procedure laid out for those who don't live close to an Apple Store.

I bet your partner will be checking pockets twice from now on!

Well what i know some people have done is to put a small piece of white paper and cover the pink sensor since they pretty much just gonna use a flash light to see if its pink. It will look white. I know someone who did it and got a replacement. Your warrenty doesnt cover water damage and theres no insurance with at&t for the Iphone. Am I saying you should do it NO. Im just saying what I know some people have done.

Oops. There we go not reading the thread. :p
