I was going to order our 2 iphones online Friday, but I think I'll hold off a few weeks until they change Family iphone plans. I bet they're going to get lots of backlash about data plans (they should allow 2 phone to share data, like phone minutes).

How exactly do you propose they do this, when the data plans are unlimited? It's not like they are sharing a fixed pool of minutes.

It is basically like this:

Family Plan is $60 (for sake of argument) with 1 phone.
Family Plan is $69.95 with 2 phones. +9.95

If you replace that second phone with an iPhone, you will be paying $20 a month more. To make it $29.95 a month you are paying for that iPhone line.

Family Plan is $89.95 with 2 phones, 1 the iPhone +$29.95

If you then wanted to add another line it would be $9.95 more

Family Plan 3 lines with 1 iPhone $99.90

If you want the third line to also be an iPhone, you would pay $20 more, to have you paying $29.95 for the third line.

Family Plan 3 lines with 2 iPhone 119.90

The $29.95 charge for an iPhone as additional line INCLUDES the 9.95 charge you get for just adding an additional line. The net difference is $20 a month, which just so happens to be the exact price it would cost to add the iPhone to any already existing plan.

The bottom line is an unlimited iPhone plan with 200 sms is going to cost $20 a month. It doesn't matter how, where or why you get or what other packages you have. You will end up paying $20 more. It is the same in every derivation and every price plan.

thanks marksman, thats much easier to understand.

one more question: does adding an unlimited message package to a family plan include the entire group for $20/mo? or do you have to pay the $20/mo for each line to get unlimited sms?

^^ Except that it comes out differently

My family plan right now....1100 minutes for 79.99 + one extra line for 9.95

now, I am replacing the main phone with the iPhone, the second line is a RAZR (9.95).....if I simply add the $20 data onto my plan it will be 99.99 + 9.95....but if I get the iPhone family plan (100) I will have a pool of 1400 minutes as opposed to the 1100....now I just need to know if I can get the 100 plan and keep the extra line at 9.95.....basically for the same price you can possibly get more minutes.

edit:
NOW
79.99 + 9.95 = 1100 minutes, no data
adding data to existing plan
79.99 + 9.95 + 20 for data = 1100 minutes, unlimited data
(what i'm hoping to do)
100 plan + 9.95 (for RAZR) = 1400 minutes, unlimited data

OK, I just got back from AT&T and basically the guy explained it to me and I understand it fully. As everyone said, I was way overcomplicating it. Anyhow, he set me up with a new line tonight and I paid $10 for a basic phone I can use as a backup for the iPhone. Also, he said I'd have no trouble putting the iPhone on my line on Friday and it wouldn't add to my contract length.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I am trying to find out the same thing. It looks like to get unlimited family txt you have to pay $30. But I am not sure.

Ok. So I am in this exact same situation. I am a secondary line on my father's plan and want to replace my current phone with an iPhone. I understand that the data plan is $20 extra so when I buy and activate it on Friday, I will be paying the same bill plus $20 extra per month.

However, my main concern extending my contract. My current plan lasts until December. Will activating an iPhone as a current At&t customer extend my contract another 2 years?

From my understanding, the iPhone will cancel your existing contract and then will give you a new 2 year one. (So your contract will go till 06/29/09 or whenever you activate it)
