My wife is the proud new owner of an iPhone4S. I am trying to help her set it up. Am currently trying to download an app called AirportZoom which appears to be available on iTunes. I can access the app on my desktop and have downloaded it within my iTunes account, however I'm having trouble accessing the iTunes store on the phone. When I select the App Store icon, I get a message "can't connect to iTunes store" and then the phone does not offer a solution... however I am able to download apps from the App Store. This is very perplexing.

I want to sign into my iTunes account and download this app to the iPhone.
I've checked around in settings and can't find a culprit. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I've been researching online and have run across several articles indicating you have to connect your iphone to your Mac to synch downloaded apps, really? I thought you'd be apple to sign into iTunes directly from your phone, sign in with your account and access your apps or at least download them to your phone, no?

Thanks!

The way you assume it should work - logging in and downloading all from your phone, is correct. That is how it should work. You shouldn't have to constantly sync with iTunes to get your apps installed. There's a problem somewhere, be it with the software on your phone, your internet connection, or the phone itself.

Thanks for answering. This phone as well as our iPad2 are online at our house. The phone appears functional. I can pull up the AppStore and download items from it. I assume I should be able to pull up an iTunes interface on my phone to examine my iTunes account as I can do with my desktop Mac. I believe all of this uses the same Apple ID. This pesky "can't connect to iTunes Store" message keeps appearing on the phone. Now maybe there is an issue with the iTunes Store this morning. Next week we are headed to the mall which happens to have an Apple Store so I'll grab a genius there. :)

It looks like I'm getting access now and I've found the "app" category. And previously downloaded items are appearing. I'm good now. Thanks! :)

To access your purchases on your iPhone/iPad go into the App Store app and tap the Updates tab at the bottom. You should see a Purchased option at the top that will show all the apps tied to your iTunes account and allow you to download them onto your device.

That is not where I'd expect it to be. Thanks for the info! :)
