...and unlike a "real" keyboard could be changed just by amending the code!

If they are going to change the keyboad layout they better do it fast.

Can you picture the screams from the masses when the keyboard they finally got use to typing fast on now changed..

I don't see them making the change. My 2 cents

Miss the Nokia 770/Maemo approach for shift

With Maemo, you drag up on a letter to do a caps version of it. I kind of expected this for the multi-touch as well. Two-thumb typing doesn't work as well with Apple's method, given that the only shift button is on the left.

Yeah... You could use this shortcut.....

or Apple could just put a friggin period and comma on the alpha screen. Jeez. If they're trying to save space on the keyboard, how about making it so everytime I put two spaces, it inserts a period in front of them, then just provide me with a comma on the keyboard instead. Just a thought.

Love the phone otherwise with the exception of some small things I'll itemize on a more appropriate thread.

The Blackberry does that as you probably know. I miss it terribly. I still find myself putting 2 spaces and having to back track.

to expand on your keyboard tip above, the iphone is smarter than you think. you can type a space after the punctuation and it returns to the alpha keyboard automatically. if you are typing a sentence and want a period (or anything else on that keyboard) and then to continue on in alpha, you hit the key to toggle to the new keyboard, type your period and then a space and it automatically returns to the alpha keyboard.

i actually prefer this to the "easy" punctuation multi-touch drag thing that is going around. once you know this trick, punctuation is no problem.

wouldn't just typing two spaces be easier? end a sentence, space, space and pow. iPhone jams a period in there.

I don't think Apple knows about this. In the "Guided Tour," the guy sends an email with a sentence in it, but didn't type a period. Bells went off in my head when I saw that, which was before I learned that punctuation was another couple taps away.

Seriously, someone needs to email this to Steve Jobs. They're getting a lot of flak for this, and it's an easy thing to explain.

This is a great tip! I still wish you could double-space for a period, but this does work well.

not if you tend to use more punctuation than a period. two spaces is easier for a period, but not for a comma, question mark, exclamation point, etc. the way it is now, you can type any punctuation or item on the second keyboard followed by a space. i also appreciate this because some people i know don't seem to understand a space is required after punctuation and maybe this will help.

I love this feature. I use it lots! Everything is more efficient & quicker on the iPhone!! :apple:

Double tap the space bar after typing, it places a period.

If you have finished typing your text, and want to put a period after it....

DOUBLE TAP THE SPACE BAR, it automatically places a period followed by a space. Try it.

I am sure this has been discussed elsewhere (I hope). But other uses of "push, hold, and slide" are for alternate characters. Push and hold the "e" for example and you get all the alternate characters available for it (like an e with an accent for Spanish).

Other letters of the alphabet with alternate characters that respond to PHS (ok, did I just create an acronim? LOL! :D) are "a" "i" "o" "s" "c" etc.

I think that's just the software automatically correcting the grammar (like automatic spell check). Double clicking the space bar is normal when typing on a full size computer. The auto grammar is just automatically adding the period. :) :apple:

Nope, the space double-tap is a specific keyboard shortcut feature. You can turn it on/off in the Settings app.

A lot of these revived threads are turning up lately, I vote for aging out old threads, or at least having a big red blinking warning before you post in them.

Yeah, I love how you are yelling at people from July 2007 telling them to use a feature that didn't exist back then. Double tapping the spacebar was added in an autumn firmware update I believe...I don't remember exactly. This is a really old thread.

Crap and now I'm keeping it alive. WHOOPS.
