December

So I will most likely wait until the middle to end of December to upgrade my Mac (before the start of the next semester here at Rice). I wonder if there is much of a chance the Pro's will be updated by then? I would probably pay the extra $$ and buy the pro IF there was a big performance benefit but when it's just a bunch of minor features I'll never use (Firewire 800, DVI for big screens, etc, lighted keyboard, etc), I'll probably buy the Macbook.

So what are the odds there will be an update by Dec? Probably not very high, right?

The odds of any more updates to the MBP before Jan 08 are IMO .0001%

Does the new Santa Rosa chipset in the MB's have any effect on heat and the fans kicking in? I've noticed that the 2.2 15 led lcd MBP's fans stay very quiet, while the fans of my MacBook 2.0ghz 13.3 (Nov 2006 rev.) kick in a lot more frequently.

Can anyone with the new MB's confirm if the heat issue is better, and that the fans run less, with the new chipset?

Having had all gens of macbooks and a recent 2.4 MBP , I sold my MBP because I like the screeen of a MB better....also the pro was over kill for me as I just surf and crap, Happy i sold it ....my new Macbook comes tomorrow :)

Congratulations, mate.

I'm happy with my C2D 2.0, but I would be really grateful to know how you find the new SR 2.2 perform in comparison, knowing that you have owned all generations of the MacBook. :)

I would think that the redesigned vents would be more significant in this regard.

I was certain about MBP until this update myself. Almost have the funds to buy, but now the decision is harder.

It occurred to me however, New 2.2 White MB vs. refurb entry MBP?

This is more competitive, though still a $400 difference for base config. Does the educational discount apply to refurbished items? If so, does a refurb MBP get the full $200 Edu discount for Pro products(vs. the $100 for consumer products)?

If so, after upgrading both to 4GB of RAM via Newegg, the pricing looks like this:
Refurb entry MBP: $1,699
New 2.2 White MB: $1,409

+$290 seems a fair deal for the added screen size/resolution, and the GPU, and all the other tiny extras(more ports/slots, etc.)

Thoughts?

No, the EDU discount is only on new Macs. I think that if you're "close" but not there yet in funds, then the macbook is for you. With the money you save, you can buy a nice external, or some other stuff that's usually important for college students (pizza, noodles, etc :p).

Thanks for the reply. Where is this redesign noted on Apple's products or spec pages? Or if not there, where has it been mentioned?

So you're saying there has been a redesign in the case of the new MBs? I thought it was identical on the outside only with the Santa Rosa architecture.

The fins are further spaced apart, before there was maybe 30 a few mm apart now there's about 4 or 5 I believe.
I saw the photo yesterday.

I'm looking in to this as well. I am leaning toward the low-end MBP. The larger screen is the main draw for me.

Nah 15 inchers and 17 inchers can do it fine Apple even gave an option for it in System Prefs. they didn't want you using it on the 12 or 14 inch iBooks or the 12 inch PowerBook bad ventilation I suppose.

Erroneous on multiple counts. The 12 inch Powerbook supported closed-lid operation and was sanctioned by Apple. In the 2003 September Paris Expo unveiling of the the updated Powerbooks (Aluminum 15 in and 2nd gen 12 and 17) SJ had a slide showing all three PBs with lids closed and external displays. I continue to use my 2nd Gen 12 PB in lid closed mode and my wife's 1st gen MB in lid-closed mode almost exclusively.

Never had a problem.

Size is now key for me. My 15" MBP is too big. MWSF hopefully will see an ultra portable MBP or a next gen MB in a new metal shell like the iPods.
