I have a trashcan 2013 Mac Pro at work with this problem. I've had it for a few years and upgraded it through multiple macOS versions as well as cruffed it up with various versions of McAfee endpoint protection etc. So I assumed the issue was a result of some of that cruft and decided to wipe it out and start with a fresh install of high sierra over my holiday vacation. The day after doing so the same issue happened again! At this point I called Apple support for my long out of support mac on xmas day and to their credit they not only helped me on a major holiday, but did so quickly, kindly, and without ever asking me to confirm a serial number to tell me I was out of support. Luckily for me the issue happened again between contacting them and collecting log files for them to look at so they had legit logs to review. After escalating the issue and having engineering look at the details of the case they came back to tell me that it was a known issue that they were working on. They were not able to tell me what is causing it, or give me an ETA on when it will be fixed if ever, but I'm at least glad they are aware of it. I know the trashcan has been basically left for dead with regards to updates, but hopefully they care about it enough to at least fix known issues like this. I can always downgrade to Sierra, but I'd prefer to stick with the latest OS in the hopes that it will be fixed soon. Fingers crossed.

D'oh! I just upgraded to high Sierra because of meltdown, and started experiencing this issue.
Not sure if my Mac is going to sleep and not waking up, or crashing and hung to become unresponsive. But it only happens when I walk away and don't come back in a long way (2-3 hours). My late 2013 Mac Pro is already configure never to sleep or hibernate, but I do let the display go to sleep.

Very tempted or re-image back to Sierra 10.12.

Update on My situation, good news and bad news...

Good News :so my 2013 Trash Can Pro has been stable, not a single crash for 4 days......
so I am not thinking I have a Bad GPU or anything like that..... It has been stable running 1 and 2 simultaneous monitors..

Bad News: I cannot pinpoint exactly what I did, although I can tell you I believe it was related to some OLDER leftover KEXTS from yesteryear.

I went through and started really cleaning up old software not used , and (of course) extensions that were not used.,
SINCE THEN, all has been reliable.

It is worth noting... I did choose to REINSTALL Mac OS on top of my existing boot partition, and this did NOT clear any old NON Apple Extensions,I had to clean these up manually.

Sorry I have no conclusive fix for an answer but, there is HOPE.... Good luck to others that have been dealing with this!

Can you post a lost of extensions to left in place? I was wondering how to identify extensions that could be removed.

Hello,
I have the latest MacPro (I use that term loosely). My monitors (there are 2) go black after being idle for a while and won't display anything until I hard power cycle the machine. This started right after I upgraded to High Sierra. Has anyone else ran into this issue, and does anyone have any recommendations to fix it?

That model is notoriously buggy, especially for video output.

I updated to 10.13.3 today and re-enabled display sleep. So far it's looking good. I'll do a few more tests over the next week.

I have High Sierra on my 2009 Mac Pro with both a GTX 680 (stock Mac version) and a Radeon 560 (not Mac version, but works fine, just doesn't show anything on boot) and it wouldn't wake from sleep either, so I worked through the suggestions I found in this order:

1. Reset NVRAM - no go
2. Reset SMC - no go
3. Safe boot - no go
4. Remove 560 - Wakey wakey!

I guess I'm lucky since I wasn't really using the 560 anyway, so taking it out doesn't really affect me. I got it for another computer that I don't need anymore so I just stuck it in the Mac Pro to see how well it would work and left it there.
I'm sorry for the rest of you that aren't so lucky. At least I can say that from my experience I can confirm that the problem is with the graphics card.

Also, in case anyone was wondering, I got High Sierra on my 2009 Mac Pro by installing firmware from a 2010 Mac Pro to fake out the installer. The only issue I have is with missing wifi drivers, but that can be fixed by upgrading the wifi module, or just using ethernet (what I do).
[doublepost=1520086114][/doublepost]Any update? I have a 2009 Mac Pro flashed to 5.1 about ready to install High Sierra is the GTX680 working now? Is there a special process to flash the video card?
