HighPoint 642L - Frequent Unexpected Disk ejects?

Recently my external Raid keeps getting ejected on it's own. It is connected to a HighPoint 642L.

I'm rather scratching my head as to what's going on.

Specs:

2008 MP 3,1 16gb, 2x2.8 Quad
OSX 10.8.5
OSX Server 2.2.2

Something to add...

I have to power the system completely off to get the drives to mount again. A reboot won't do it.
 
Today's 10.8.5 Supplemental had something to do with external drives ejecting... have you installed it yet?

I suspect you need someone to point you to the correct system event log to see what is causing the eject.

That said... A couple days ago I ordered the OWC USB3/Sata card.

I installed it. I'm hammering the hell out of my server right now. 4 Macs doing time machine backups, and 2 macs ripping DVD's, and another mac doing 2 rsyncs. So far no surprise ejects. I would say that Highpoint has a problem.... I reserve judgement as it has only been 2 hours.

Tomorrow if there are still no surprise ejects I would have to say that the Highpoint has an issue when under load when all 4 ports are being used.
 
I re-installed OSX new. Erased my boot drive and did a clean install. Upgraded everything to current. Now I get these panics every 15-20 min.

I hope you are using TimeMachie for backups. I would roll back to 10.8.4 and run without the HP raid for a few days of testing.

If that all works out, I would then add the raid volume back into the mix. It kind of sounds like the HP card is failing, but it could be another piece of hardware failing too (including one of the drives).
 
There's 12 drives total and 2 HPT cards.

4x 3TB drives on 1 eSATA as a Raid5 Volume
4x 2TB drives on 1 eSATA as a Raid5 Volume
4x 1TB drives on 1 eSATA as a Raid0 Volume

All of them have the same problem. So I would have to have 1 bad drive in each raid set, or 3 bad cables or 2 bad cards.

1 of my eSATA boxes also has a FW800 port. If I plug that in instead of the eSATA the Volume is stable and never ejects. If I remove the HPT driver and use only the FW800 port the system is stable.

Another issue that I just discovered is:

Highpoint driver crashes. It could be: driver issue with 10.8.5, firmware incompatibility (like 640L) or dying card. Contact Highpoint, seems that they improved their support for Mac compatible products.

Edit: I see that you already did...
Send them KP log if you didn't.

I just ordered a Newer Tech 4 port eSATA card from OWC.

I hoping for better results :)
 
10.8.5 has issues. Has anyone thought of using apple's bug reporter? They do read what's posted a and I've used it to get several annoying bugs fixed for os/x and xcode

While the issues are near and dear to us and it's always a great idea to let the big A what we run into.

They may email back saying: "Thank you for your assistance in helping us discover and isolate bugs within our products. "
 
So....

I'm now using a 2 CalDigit cards (non-raid).

It's been stable since. (almost 2 days).

Ejects and panics occurred almost every hour... so I think I'm on to something..

While I'd rather use a hardware raid 5 it looks like I'm going to go the route of software (OSX) mirroring.
 
i'm curious if any other users can comment on the 642L.

the issues the OP described are disturbing, but i'm wondering if it was another variable that was causing the problem.

any other users here with this card who can chime in? i'd like to get one as it covers a couple of needs in 1 card, but obviously i can't have random ejects...

Perhaps totally unrelated, but in my 4,1 I was using a Highpoint 2720SGL RAID card using native OS X drivers and ever since I upgraded to Mavericks it would usually eject the drives coming out of sleep. A full restart was required. Of course, as I said, this could have no relation, or it could be part of wider issues with Highpoint cards and OSX.

I wonder if the problem resides in trying to connect a hardware raid? The OP did eventually get things working by using A software raid with a different card. Perhaps if the externals were not on a hardware raid with the 642L he wouldn't have had the random ejects?

Probably too late for the OP to check.

FWIW, I was using a SW RAID0 setup from Disk Utility on the Highpoint. It's just something with the card and Mavericks didn't get along. With the nMP coming, I didn't bother to dig into it.
 
I did finally find the root cause.

4 of my 2TB drives. 3 of them are Fujitsu and 1 is a Seagate. Of the Fujitsus 2 are 7200rpm and 1 is 5400rpm. The Seagate is a 7200rpm. Whenever, these 4 drives are on the same eSATA chain whether as a JBOD, Raid0 or Raid5 I have the above eject issue. If I separate them on different eSATA chains they behave.

I've since replaced them and now use 16 3TB SAN drives from Western Digital and they are working perfectly with the HighPoint 642L.

a few more questions. i've read of some cards only supporting port multiplication of 4 drives (which seems to be the enclosures you're using). did you every try a 5 bay drive with PM?

also, this may not apply to snarfquest, but has anyone tried this card as a hardware raid controller? any comments?
 
I've never tried a 5 drive enclosure.

I am using the 642L as a hardware raid 5 controller. Works well.
 
I'm experiencing these same eject/unmount issues using a HighPoint 2722 card on 5,1 running 10.8.5. Are you finding that the issues are resolved running latest 10.9? HighPoint's driver doesn't list support for 10.9 on this card as far as I can tell.

I received this equipment and had no use of it prior to 10.8.5, so I have no personal baseline. Although my friend states that he never experienced unmount issues with same hardware.
