I'm experiencing these same eject/unmount issues using a HighPoint 2722 card on 5,1 running 10.8.5. Are you finding that the issues are resolved running latest 10.9? HighPoint's driver doesn't list support for 10.9 on this card as far as I can tell.

I received this equipment and had no use of it prior to 10.8.5, so I have no personal baseline. Although my friend states that he never experienced unmount issues with same hardware.

I had the issues with all versions 10.8.5 to 10.9.1. The issue was the 4x 2TB drives not playing nice with each other on the same eSATA chain.

Thanks for your feedback. Bit disappointing. The card I have is being used exactly as intended, within 10.8.5, so it's quite embarrassing for HighPoint. Needless to say if I have to replacement I stay far away from this company.

I run the card in my home server. It doesn't sleep.

would it be possible to test that? just sleep and wake a few times? if it is i'd be interested in the results. if you can't spare the downtime i fully understand.

Snarf,
Just about to take delivery of a 642L, any idea if it will play nice with
10.8.5 ??
I'm not ready to go Mavericks just yet.

Initially it will just be giving me a 6GB/s buss in a new 5,1 Hex MP.
EVO 750gb as a nice fast system/boot disk.

I couldn't find specific info about "Trim" on this, hoping that won't be an
issue !

Cheers,
Martin.

My 644L which is basically the same card is having no trouble sleeping after the firmware update.

I originally used mine in 10.8 and it worked fine. Being a server however I never let it sleep. So no clue on sleep issues.

In 10.8 you need to install the drivers that are on the Highpoint web site.

For 10.9 the drivers are part of OSX so you don't need the drivers. However you do need the little web gui management app. So when you do the install do an advanced install and unselect the drivers and install only the web interface.

I'm struggling with this card at the moment.
MP 5,1 on 10.8.5

Mac sees the card.
Web portal is working.
I was on BIOS V 1.0, then there was a version that that had "efi64bit" which I
thought to be newer, flashed it via the portal and the MP was locking up.

On portal BIOS V was not showing up at all !

Got it to boot from original HDD and flashed back to V 1.0 which seems to be
latest on the site.

I have a copy of the 10.8.5 installed on EVO SSD, it just will not boot from it.

I am not following the "make array from portal - then use disk utility and use
CCC to clone a version of OSX to the SSD while on the array" instructions.

I'm not dumb but have NO idea what settings to use for this, I just need JBOD
setup to look at a single drive.
Having installed OSX on the new EVO SSD I'm reluctant to erase that and start again.

Any advice on the array settings ?
I may otherwise call it a "lemon" and return it and get an Apricorn card.

Many thanks,

Martin.

So my understanding is that you have a Single EVO SSD with 10.8.5 already installed, correct?

First off, are you sure you're using the ROCKETRAID 642L and not the ROCKETRAID 644L, or the RocketRAID 642 (no L)? If it says "rocket" and not rocketRAID, or if it has no L things are different.

If this is the case, you can forget about the cloning process. However, before you boot onto the card, you need to some things:

1. You need to make sure the 642L EFI ROM/Firmware is installed. I know you said it "locked up" when you attempted it, I would attempt again as this is a necessary step. Attached is a copy of the ROM (the .rom file), as well as the latest WebGUI.

2. If you are using 10.8, you need to install the DRIVER into OS X on the drive. Attached is the driver (the .dmg)

The "Clone" process is only necessary to get a copy of OS X installed onto the drive, as the OS X 10.8 installer you boot into doesn't have the driver for the card. If you have OS X installed on the drive already, you can skip the clone process, but you still to install the driver onto the hard drive.

Of note: In 10.9, Apple has included a copy of the driver is in both the installer and the installed copy of the OS.

On "building the array" -- If you are just using JBOD, you don't have to "build" anything, just install the driver and the firmware, plug in the drive, and it should "just work". The card has the ability to setup a RAID-0 and a RAID-1.

Slug = yes you understand perfectly and I didn't = unfortunately !
( it's a rocket raid 642L )
I found the read me.txt files a little confusing to say the least and on the site it's
pretty hard to find mac related info.

Thanks V much for the help but it's on it's way back now.

I decided that the Apricorn V2 solo would be a better option, SSD is on the
card ( mine was floating around in the mac with some tape on it ) and i gain
a drive bay back, SATA pwr was tapped from bay 4.

I save 90 euro's too .... that will suit me fine as the RAID side of the card was
just an option for later, I didn't really need it and I was not understanding it either.

I think that I flashed the card with something I should have installed on the
mac by the sounds of it !!

Never mind, perhaps it's my loss but once again the help is most appreciated.

Apricorn is faster too, especially with that EVO. Enjoy!

So with 10.10 I was back to the Frequent disk ejects. It was never 100% resolved. Even back in this thread when I thought it was resolved it would still randomly have issues about once a month. So, I've given up on the HighPoint 642L card and got a NewerTech MAXPower RAID Mini-SAS 6G 2e with 2 External Mini-SAS SFF-8088 to 4x eSATA Fan Out Cables.

It's been running for over a month now with 0 issues and first impressions are WOW. I should have done this a long time ago. The speed jump is very noticeable! I've also reconfigured my drives into a Raid 5+0 and I divided up the drives to use 2 connectors on each fan out cable.

A SAS controller is definitely the way to go, even when hooking up eSATA disk drives IMO.
