neither the cMP or the cylinder have avhcd/hvec engine built-in on cpu or on guenuine GPU . So the work is mainly (and poorly) done by the cpu like a traditional work , not like the new I9 ot i7 and the new GPU.
No longer the case in Mojave with a cMP and Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB.
Admittedly Mojave is still in Beta but HEVC is coming to the cMP and the nMP will likely never get it.

OP, sell your nMP while you can and pick up a Dual CPU 5,1 cMP. You can then add an Amfeltec card with some NVME SSDs for storage, an AHCI PCIe SSD for boot, a USB 3 card, perhaps a Sonnet Solo 10GbE card and a Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8 GB.
This, along with Mojave release in September will keep you going nicely for a while. It’ll blow the socks off your current nMP.

well,
as I say, no one know what apple will do with the 2019 « macpro » and buying an imac pro unless your company pay for it is dam stupid...

ANY 2009 cMP upgraded with 2xx5690, 128 gb of ram , a 4 ssd in raid 0, and a top of the line graphic card will do the same for 3000$ period.

and the ssd / GPU you buy for it will still probably work on the 2019 because they have no choice to embrace standard PCIe slot, otherwise they wont sale because people learned the lesson with the cylinder.

so sale your cylinder before it’s worth nothing, buy a cMP for cheap, built it for your need for 3000$ and call it a day...

you have to buy a 12core imac pro with the highest gpu option to equal this.

if you want to spend 10k buy a cyclone expander an slap 3 vega64

I myself have something similar to what you describe. 5,1 dual 5690, 48 GB, 7970 graphics card, 512 GB PCIe hard drive, and four HDDs in raid for storage and backup. It’s a wonderful computer. FCPX works like a dream (not doing 4K though).

However, I use my computer recreationally, and for weekend warrior video work.

This fellow sounds like he uses his computer to earn money. I doubt he wants to fart around with hacks to make an external graphics card work. I expect my computer is not as fast as the low end iMac Pro at this point on FCPX. I would sell it and get an iMac Pro, but I can’t bear to part with my 30” ACD.

Basically, the 5,1 is a solid machine, and would probably fit his need today, but is facing a high likelihood of obsolescence in the near future. If you have one, upgrade it. Otherwise, I think it’s time to move on.

Edit: Oh, and FWIW, it’s all the same if ‘your company’ pays for it. Either way, it comes out of the producer’s work. Your boss doesn’t give you a computer. He just takes some of what you’ve earned and gives it back to you.
