Does that indicate a possibility for a new iPad before the end of the year with a camera?

Why else would that matter on an iPad if it had no camera?

Pretty sure he meant to say HDR coming in 4.1 when he said that in the end, and 4.2 coming to iPad (and the other iOS devices). I guess I'm the only person that doesn't care about a camera on the iPad. I'd look downright silly trying to hold it steady. I shake enough w/the iPhone 4. ;)

That's what docks are for...

Not easy to do when you're outside or traveling. Image stabilization is something that will hopefully come to iOS devices down the road.

Yep, but it's not like anyone is forcing people to use it.

And you can download GPS-dependent apps on a non-GPS iPad too. Just because there's a software feature available doesn't mean that hardware will automatically follow.

That means there an iPad coming out with a camera by November. So, where are all those people who said there wouldn't be a new iPad until next April? Come on, show your faces....

bad analogy - I have a wifi only iPad and google maps works great wherever I've had it connect...

I'm guessing a slip up. I doubt they would update things so soon after there release. Never seen it happen with the iPhone/iPod touch before.

Yes, this is exactly what it means.

Just because there's a software feature available doesn't mean that hardware will automatically follow.

Why make it available on the iPad then? So, are they going to put an unusuable Camera icon on the iPad too then? I highly doubt they are going to put an HDR option on an iPad without a camera.

If you look at the earlier releases of the iPod, you will see that there were updates every 6-7 months at first. As the technology and market matured, they started to space out the releases. I'm sure the ealier releases were closer together due to competitive reasons.

The iPad is a new market. From now till Christmas, we are going to see an onslaught of new competition. If Apple just sits on their hands, they will lose sales. They will need to evolve and do so quickly. One of the big reasons the iPad is flying off the shelf is that there is zero competition.

As for the iPhone, the reason only 1 is made per year is because cellphone contracts are traditionally 1-2 years in length. It wouldn't make much sense to introduce mutliple iPhones per year when you just sold people one and they can't buy a new one due to contractual reasons.

I'm right here, and I'm still guaranteeing it wont be updated this year.

Why in the world the fascination with a camera on the iPad??? Seriously? You guys (gals) would actually use an iPad to take pictures? I can't find enough fantastic stuff to do on mine...I LOVE it...but taking pictures??? I guess I'm totally lost...maybe a front facing, low res cam for VOiP apps or Facetime, etc.

...But a decent rez camera (able to take decent HDR shots) on the back side of this device makes ZERO sense to me! And I'm not totally old school. As a photographer and videographer, I don't mind shooting with my iPhone (if my other cameras aren't handy)...but I can't imagine holding up an iPad to snap a picture...that almost seems to be taking a step backwards! Maybe a peripheral, blue tooth device that is almost all lens...with just enough electrical hardware to send the shot in RAW form to the iPad for rendering....but an actual camera to take stills or motion with seems silly. Sorry.

? I thought docks were to charge the device, or otherwise connect to useful devices (computer/audio/et al.). I think I would be even shakier trying to hold up an iPad AND a dock...Say Cheese!!! :) (Kidding, of course:))

OK, I respect that. Now, besides from being magical, how do you explain HDR capabilities coming to the current iPad?

I completely agree. The iPad with a camera would be kinda strange. Then again, iMovies was ported to the iPhone. That said, I would like a forward-facing camera for FaceTime.

I'll double that guarantee. And the "no camera" whining really is nonsensical. I have a Canon G9 that I absolutely love but now it feels cumbersome compared to my iPhone camera. And I can put the G9 in my pocket. There's just no way I'd ever want to use a tablet as a camera.

As for FaceTime, yes it's cool and looks great on commercials, but really, who over 25 wants to make video calls with any regularity?

I have zero doubt that a FaceTime camera will appear on the iPad, but for many people it will be used about as regularly as PhotoBooth is on a Mac.

Simplify software deployment. To have one version of iOS software to cover all the devices.

But there isn't just one version of iOS now, nor is there a single version of 10.6. Why would there suddenly just be one version of iOS now? And Apple putting an unusuable camera icon on an iPad with no camera is just plain sloppy and unprofessional. This still doesn't explain why Jobs himself said HDR is coming to the iPad. I would think he meant "HDR" as in the HDR ability/function, not the code for HDR in the coding of the iOS.

To clarify, "one version" was not the correct term. I should have said "release cycle". It would make since to release "updates" for all the iOS devices at the same time.

To maintain two different lines of iOS would not be good coordination.

Steve probably just meant the iPad's Photos app will be updated to recognize HDR photos that are imported from an iPhone. When you take an HDR photo in iOS 4.1, there is an HDR icon that appears over it in the iPhone's Photos app, so perhaps the iPad's photos app will display the same thing.

Of course in reality it could be that all of the software support for taking HDR photos will also be present in iOS 4.2 as well, but just won't be used until possibly next year or whenever an iPad with a camera might be released.

There are no notable tablets slated for release between now and Christmas - at least I cannot find any that are in a similar price class, with similar features that have been announced by any of the big brands except Toshiba. Smaller manufacturers do not get the same market penetration that a large company like HP, Dell or Apple can, and therefore do not present a real "threat" to Apple's market share.

Furthermore, the iPad still hasn't officially been rolled out in all markets, and production has only just now caught up with demand. It makes more economic sense (from the view of a manuacturer) to offer small price drops and/or add value through package deals in order to spice up demand than all the effort that needs to go into a product launch. Christmas is only 4 months away, which doesn't give much time to release new products and have them established in the market in time for Christmas, which is probably why some manufacturers are not going to release tablets until 2011 (e.g. Samsung and HP).

Additionally all these ipad release speculations are based on unsubstantiated rumours - nowhere near the amount of information that was flowing through the internet many months before the iPad's original launch.

You also need to ask yourself what is worse, pissing a few people off because you didn't release a new product, or piss off many more because you can't meet demand?

I think this is exactly what he meant. It even says as much on MR's homepage live recap of the event. To the previous poster, consider my face shown. :)

No new rev iPad until 2011.

Having a camera would be great for making the ipad an all inclusive tool. Take a pic of a whiteboard in a meeting, let an insurance adjuster document an accident, support facetime or skype chat.

I think that an ipad camera could get away with following the model of MacBooks with only a front facing camera instead of iphone with 2 cameras.
