i am back on my 2015 Mid macbook pro and I hear the fans constantly buzzing, but I miss the bigger screen size for sure.

I have less than 4 days left to figure out if I will return my MBP M1 8/512. Didn't play with it much because I always felt like I was going to return it but now I'm not so sure. Still want the 14 inch MBP but no real idea when it'll be out... so torn. Especially since I'll lose money by keeping/selling my current M1 to replace it with the 14 inch redesign but I really want a redesigned MBP. Gah!

I also think in the future I will get a 14" MBP. But it all depends on the features and cost. But for now, I am keeping my M1 Air. I will get a least a year's use out of it and can use that time to adapt to life in the Apple Silicon ecosystem.

And if the 14" is a dud I can hold on a longer with the Air, because it is a pretty great system.

I will return my M1 MBP.
Kernel panics and reboots when using my new LG38WN95C-W display (crashes and reboots everything when the display go to sleep mode) are not acceptable.
One time I also had problems with bluetooth connections (magic trackpad 2 and keyboard). Several times the finder was not responding anymore...

I guess I will wait until MBP 16 inch or the 13 inch with more than 2 TB ports (whatever will be announced by Apple). I hope for external display support with minimum 2 displays.

I’m trying to convince myself of the same. I mean I spent $1,645 on my MBP and that’s about as much as I want to spend. There’s nothing to not love about this M1 except the bezels annoy me. I feel like I want to hang onto it just because it’s new.... but I can do just fine with my 2013 MBP for right now.

Honestly though I may just need something a little bigger or just more screen! I think part of the appeal is lost on me because it’s just so compact... and looks so similar to the old machine.

Interesting you mentioned being so similar. I had a 2019 16" MBP and a 2020 13" MBP. Part of the reason for the MB Air M1 was to get away from the old shape. Plus I went with the Gold color, so it looks unique to me.

I wonder how many people returned their M1 for an Intel model and then regretted it after experiencing how good the M1 actually is. I would rather be without tools/apps than go back to an Intel model. Support will come, even if its emulated it still performs on par or better than the Intel counterpart (in most scenarios). M1 is literally ahead of its time.

I love the M1

Probably will return for 2 reasons.

1. As a developer, not enough of my tools are M1 ready.
2. Dead M1's from apparently using some usb adapters ?

#2 isn't specific to M1 models. See https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/which-usb-c-dock-for-an-m1-macbook-pro.2275036/post-29434726

There's also the unknown as to whether the macbook simply experienced infant mortality and the owner assumed an external cause.

IMHO, stick with a well known name-brand hub/dock and you shouldn't have any issue.

Sold my Intel macs and keeping my M1 -- does everything I need it to do, fast, silent, and cool.

What aspects of the redesign are you expecting to make a substantial difference?

FWIW I switch between my 14.0" windows work laptop and my 13.3" MBP and honestly don't discern a screen size difference unless I specifically set them side by side and compare. IMHO they're functionally indifferent.

Well I’m sure that there isn’t a VAST difference so in all honestly I just want a laptop that feels and looks updated since there are rumors of one around the corner....

The M1 MBP is snappy, super compact and lightweight but it’s not knocking my socks off... a reduction in bezels is the most important to me and if they’re coming out with Mini LED on the new models I’m interested in that technology as well.

My 2013 retina mbp has a retina burned screen and new screen technology intrigued me.

If my 2013 wasn’t hanging in there I would definitely keep the M1 base model.

Why keep what you really don't want? You have your answer. The logical thing to do is to return the M1 and patiently wait for the second round of M's to be released.

Anyone know how long to get money back from mail in refund?

I did decide to return my M1. Sent FedEx last Tuesday, Apple received 12/31.
What confuses me is apples website does not acknowledged they received it or I sent it in. When I call Apple, twice now, they acknowledge they received it and have no answer on why website status, they see it. They say it takes up to 5 days.

Any real world experience you can share ?

As to why I returned

1. Developer tools - Too many of my developer tools not ready yet and not close.
2. External HD speed - Much slower that all my other Macs. When I plugged in an encrypted 500 GIG Samsung T5 drive it took almost a minute to recognize. Something squirrly speed wise, at least on mine
3. 13" - Never had a 13" before and my eyes really suck. I though I could manage , but no.

Overall I was quite impressed with this unit and can tell M1 will be a bright future, once all the main apps are native.

You hit the nail on the head, my friend. Exactly this. I was hoping I would fall in love but didn't.... IF 2020 hadn't had a pandemic I would have easily just gone to the store while they were on display to play with it and I would have known if it was for me or not. It's not my MO to buy something I don't intend to keep but I had hoped I would be WOWED by it enough to be completely happy with it. In my heart, I know that I want the redesign because I desire something fresh. I still love my 13 inch 2013 MBP but my gut is starting to tell me that maybe I really do just want a bigger laptop... when the new machines are out I may even shoot for the 16 inch model.

I've initiated the return. Have my label... logged out of all of the apps/icloud/messages.... I only need to wipe it before I pack it up and go drop it off. I need my refund back on my credit card before the 21st of the month so I just had to do it today.

A part of me is sad but a part of me knows I'm doing the right thing. I just need to wait a little longer....

Let me know where to send the bill. I give discounts for those on retainer. :D Glad you got that weight off your mind. Hopefully, in 6 months (or less) you will have your 14" and all will be right in the M world for you. :)

To me the calculus on this is always dependent upon what you're coming from and have to use and how well the currently released M1's fit what you want/need.

For instance, if you have a 2013/2014 15" MBP, you probably like that larger screen size and your existing machine is mostly fully depreciated anyhow = obvious wait out this year to see the larger M powered options that we **know** are coming.

But...if you are a 2017 MBA user - the already released M1 MBA's just **destroy** what you are coming from = obvious upgrade ASAP

Also - if you have a fully loaded MBP from the last couple years, you might want to jump now before you lose anymore money as the "jumping off Intel" bandwagon will only accelerate.

I'm in the UK, all stores are now closed and the '14 days after reopening' rule for returns is in place. I'll be looking to return my Air for a 16Gb model. I need to use what I have until I can return in store. Do Apple care if I use the Air until I'm able to return it?

I grabbed one, took it back, tried using a 2019 i5 for 2-3 days and went back to the M1. I setup RDP on my Windows 10 laptop and sat it in a corner. I'll work on accessing it from outside my network later this week. So far so good.

I ran into a huge snag while I was trying to wipe the computer… I followed some instructions I found through MacRumors… Unfortunately I wound up putting the computer in recovery mode and unable to recover it because I didn’t back anything up and had already deleted my info.

I really thought I bricked it by accident but I called Apple support and they were going to walk me through the long process. When he said that it would be time consuming I stopped him right there and said “hey can I just return the laptop in this condition do you guys?” I was only calling because I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to get in trouble for sending it this way. He put me on hold and came back and said that I was good to go on returning it.

so yeah... next computer I purchase I will be certain is a keeper!

Fedex should pick it up and have it on its way to the California facility tomorrow. ?

Definitely keeping, this M1 Mini is one of the most reliable Macs I've owned. Never slows down, no weird bugs or crashes, just a steady little workhorse and it's really gotten me back into my hobbies of writing, drawing, coding, and making little pieces of music. Makes a nice always on media server too. I'm still suspicious it will go bad like my last Intel Mini, but fingers crossed. If I weren't actively using it though I would probably return it, I have the feeling the next gen of Apple chips are going to be a big improvement.

I tried my M1 1TB/16GB for a week but coming from a larger screen could not get used to the tiny size, even though my first MBA was the one from 2010. I noticed my shoulder became hunched typing on that one. I should not though that I measured the keyboard: same size as my MBP 2015.
I guess I'll have to wait a year and then spend twice as much :(

Mine's a keeper.

I'll upgrade to a 16" when they come out, and leave this machine at my nan's place where I spend most weekends.
