It's so small, I always imagined them to be bigger.

Glad they aren't in NZ though, we just have sheep.

Unfortunately - they do come in bigger sizes, fortunately - not where I live.

So 16 years in AZ, and you see ONE? I spend one night in 29 palms and I'm treated first thing. I have all the luck. :)

You have poisonous spiders though, don't ya? My friend got bit by one when she was living down there and it was eating away at her flesh. She eventually went to the doctor and he gave her an Rx that was powerful enough to stop the decay.

Not all scorpions are dangerous. Most of them are like a bee sting, numbing and burning. The one's that are dangerous are the really scary ones!

From wikipedia:
A sting on the thumb from a relatively non-dangerous scorpion often feels like the victim has accidentally struck their thumb with a hammer whilst driving in a nail. A sting from a truly dangerous scorpion can feel much worse, as though the victim had hammered a nail right through their thumb.

I'm glad I live in the UK, we only have to put up with house spiders.

I hate spiders much worse than these guys... and I just Wikipedia'd scorpion and apparently there ARE some there.. Something about the fruit trade from asia, however their habitats are being destroyed so I guess humans are finally destroying the right areas of the forest :p jk jk

Woah, scary scorpion. Remind me never to get a Mac that doubles as an electric heater. :p

The worst I've encountered over here was a giant praying mantis standing on my desk. I mean seriously, this thing must've been 7" tall and the most fluorescent shade of green I've ever seen. Not poisonous but damn evil looking.

Is that an 8800 GTX?

Freakin' sweet

It's hot, I dont see why so many people say they would freak if they saw such a thing but yeah, I see why the post title is switcher (he must've used the 8800 in his old PC)
It seem's to have just 'appeared under the desk'

It must have felt at home given the desert-like conditions of your dusty Mac Pro.

If I saw that thing in my room the first thing I would be doing would be swinging at them with the closest thing I could find.. like a ****ing baseball bat.

That's insane! I've lived in Northern Arizona all my life and I've only seen 3 scorpions indoors (besides pets). They were all babies, too, which is worse!

I have a feeling you didn't squash it because it was resting on your Mac. ;) I know I wouldn't want to get guts all over mine! lol

Generally, in the US, you want to encounter the larger ones. Their venom is less potent. It's the really small ones you have to worry about.

Really? I thought it was the other way around.
Funny story about that. Back when I lived in Arizona some friends of mine left their 8-10 month old baby crawling around on the floor, and she went into the kitchen, found a tiny scorpion on the floor, picked it up and squished it in her fist. Before the scorpion died it stung her, so they took her to the hospital. Her hand swelled up for a while but then she was fine. After that her older siblings called her "scorpion killer."
That's pretty frightening to find one in SF, though, on your computer. All the years I lived in AZ I never had even one inside my house.

Even if it was sitting on your Mac? I can't see that ending well...

mmmm...sheep!
 Are you Greek? Just kidding...

One morning, I got up, grabbed my toothbrush, started brushing my teeth, and when I bent over to spit in the sink, I saw a dark shape a few inches from my face. I stood up and turned on the light to see what I had just been nose to nose with and it was a scorpion. Talk about waking up quickly.

Crazy!

@blaskillet4;

Thanks for the posts. Incredible.

1> I'm glad that you didn't just squash the little guy (I know I would've after being freaked). Now he's employed as a watch guard for the Mac's ;)

2> I'm from Canada so I don't know about the Bay area ... but I believe that even Cupertino some 30-40yrs ago was in fact a desert no?

3> I'm more concerned as to why it travelled so far from the desert if it did ... mass migration?

some thoughts.

- check local pet store to see what kind of scorpion it is and see if the local hospital has an antidote for its venom. Next put the local 3 hospitals on your phone speed dial along with EVERY member of your family to inform them just in CASE this watch guard gets out and tries to liberate its vengence. Also inform your local doctor .. and let immediate neighbors know as well - especially if they have little kids that like to play in the yard; you DON'T want to be held responsible if they get stung or worse from this scorpion.

Try to get a nice case for this guy with lots of white sand, some crickets or whatever they eat, and maybe a bonsai tree.

Cheers.

"All the years I lived in AZ I never had even one inside my house."

... That you know of. :D

I think I have bad luck with creepy insects. Just remembered when I was wee, parents took me to see the Carlsbad Caverns on the way to see family in Cali. After visiting the caves and the bat-stench associated with them, wanted to get something to drink. I go to a convenience/tourist trap store, grab a pepsi and proceed to enjoy it outside. People walking by the store kept on staring at me and then a few started to point. Being the punk teen, I was wondering WTF their problem was. As I stepped away from the wall, there were 2 tarantulas chilling RIGHT above my head. Not one person gave me a heads up on the spiders, just gawked. Fortunately, spiders (for the most part) don't freak me nearly as bad as Scorpions. That said, I was not inclined to get any closer to them.

Now this is scary! Fortunately i am living in singapore. Nearly impossible to find a scorpio at hme, only some little pests...

I'd take a scorpion in my house over a cockroach ANYDAY! Roach's freak the hell outta me! Glad they have a hard time surviving here.

You would not believe what I just found under my desk!:eek::eek: ...
The first thing I thought of was a bad spy movie. Someone always slips a scorpion through the unsuspecting victims window ...

Does your wife work for the CIA or something? :)

California is a pretty big place. Parts of it are desert, parts of it are mountainous, parts of it are wet and heavily forested, etc. The Bay Area is not a desert and I wouldn't have guessed that there were scorpions there. Besides, the area I live in is a desert and there are no scorpions here.

But then again, how many mac computers have ever been to california? 'Designed by Apple in California, Made in China'
Do they have scorpions in china i think would be a better question.
