I never felt that my iPhone 11 Pro display was choppy when scrolling. Then, a few days ago I got my 12 Pro Max and the first time I scrolled a website on it, it felt completely choppy and laggy. Big difference. For the first hour of using the phone I began developing a headache and eye strain, and was thinking I’d have to switch to one of the Androids if I wanted a phone this big.
At some point after that though, I stopped noticing any choppiness and simply forgot about the whole thing. Now I just love this phone to death and am honestly not missing a higher refresh rate at all. Which does surprise me, based on that experience I had during the first hour.
That said, I do think 120 Hz will still be a noticeable and very pleasant upgrade when it does come. Probably similar to how the shift to True Tone was on the iPhone; I hadn’t noticed my displays had had any unnatural tint, but when I started using an iPhone with TT my eyes would just feel so much less strained. I think that’s how it’ll feel when the iPhone gets 120 Hz.
I do have a 12.9” iPad Pro but I find that display experience so fundamentally different from that of any phone that comparing the two doesn’t really make sense. It’s so much bigger, held much further from the face and is generally used in such a totally different way.
TL;DR I think 120 Hz on iPhone is going to be a great upgrade, but regardless of that I’m not missing it now and it’s definitely no deal breaker. The 12 Pro Max is a fabulous phone and so smooth in every other way that the package as a whole still works brilliantly without a higher display refresh rate.
