Hey folks -

I recently jailbroke my phone with some firmware I got off these forums to give me 3.1.2 with Cydia.

I reinstalled all my usual aps, etc. However, I noticed yesterday that my battery had ran all the way down, and shut the phone off. This is the first time that's every happened since I bought the phone a year ago.

Before I do a complete wipe of my phone, is there something that anyone could think of that might be causing this crazy battery usage?

I woke up this morning at 8AM with the phone 100% charged. It is now 3:20PM and the battery is at 63% - I made 1 phone call that lasted 30 seconds so far today.

In 2 hours, sitting with the screen locked, the phone went from 73% to 63%

Here's a brief rundown of what I have installed. I've hard reset the phone a couple times to see if that fixes it, but so far it hasnt.

SBSettings
3G Unrestricter
ClearCam
videorecorder3g
Reminder/Notifier (first time I'm using this....might this be the culprate?)
gRIP
Categories
Kirikae
Backgrounder
AppSync 3.1
Cylay 3 (removed this, thinking it might be the problem....didnt change anything)
Five Icon Dock

In addition to that, I have a bunch of Appstore apps, nothing too crazy, just stuff I've always had on my phone.

my battery life has sucked as well after the 3.1.2 update. went straight from 3.0 to 3.1.2 so no 3.1 comparison. JB via pwnage tool. also, always been jailbroken so no compare to non-jb either. i did a full restore and setup as new, then reinstalled all from cydia. i had thought maybe it was due to the commcenter hack, since i did the update and commcenter a day apart, but have since reverted it to the original and still having bad battery life.

glad to see it's not just me.

edit: one other thing I just thought of - the other day the battery ran all of the way down to zero, shutting the phone off. immediatly upon plugging it back in the phone turned back on and the battery percentage showed 10% (under 3.0 it would've charged for a while then turned back on once up to ~5%). another time it got down to 16% and when i plugged it in to charge the display changed to 25%. something is off with the battery calibration.

My battery was the same way on my 3GS. It would drop down to 75% after an hour of doing nothing but just sitting there. I downgraded it to 3.0 and have left it there.

My 3G and 2G iPhones have been perfect on the latest jailbreak using Pwnage.

Same here. Drops to 75-80% after a few hours of doing nothing. I get to 20% every evening after charging all night and taking off charger at 7am. I had jailbroken then installed 3.1. I wonder if anything from the jailbreak (background processes) that might not have cleared out. I haven't tried a new install yet. I have always restored from backup.

I tried both a new install and from a backup and it drained the battery super fast both times.

i have noticed mine to be a lot worse too as i used to be able to make it two days without charging now it has to be charged every night, kind of depressing and it sucks to have to watch the battery meter just go down from not even using it

I had the same problem, I turned off push and notifications and restarted. That fixed it...then, I turned push back on and it's been fine since. I think my Yahoo push was screwing something up as the problem started after I started using my Yahoo push account (for this forum as a matter of fact). I turned off push for Yahoo as I don't use that account much, leave push on for my Exchange account and all is fine again.

I don't have notifications turned back on...but I don't care as I never used them.

I noticed that the back of my phone was HOT when it was going through the battery so it was hitting the internet for something. I rebooted the phone many times and that didn't help. What I typed above fixed it.

ps 3GS 3.01 jailbroken

I'm unlocked on the latest firmware on my 3gs and I'm gtting better battery life.

To the OP honestly I always got poor battery life after the sbssettings, notifier in the past so that'd why I don't have it installed. Then again I Was on 3.0 & 3.1. I currently have tlert and some winterboard setting like blue dock and clear dock. I'm losing about 20% in 3 hrs I think. Before it was about 20 in 2hrs. Also tweaks to my 3gs unlock include having the blackberry click, and the aol text message sound and good battery life. I think the appsync I dled is kinda killing my battery since I installed it a few days ago so I'm gonna uninstall it. It's good for testing apps though.

Anyway I love sbssettings. Very innovative approach but the battery life really sucked. I'd search for a different application like boss prefs, or if you toggle certain things like bluetooth they have an app on cydia that let's u turn off Bluetooth by pressing an icon.

Also note that if you get poor signal you'll get poor battery life. Like one day I was checking the net and I had 1bar. Needless to say my battery life was horrible that day.

I was just about to post about the same thing. I have a 3GS that was JB on 3.0 with no problems at all. When the JB for 3.12 came out, I upgraded and I too have horrible battery life now. To put to rest the issue over what you have installed - I ONLY have 3G Unrestrictor.. and nothing else. All regular apps.

My question is - has anyone had success downgrading to 3.1 JB, or even back to 3.0 JB and improved battery life? If so.. is there a a step by step process I can follow to do this?

Thanks in advance!

after thinking about it and seeing somewhere that SBSettings could be the culprit (i don't believe that btw) i got to thinking that i did recently, since updating to 3.1.2 install "Rotation Inhibitor" for my SBSettings. So today I turned it off and my battery life seems to have returned to 3.0 lifespan. perhaps something in the rotation inhibitor is always running and draining the battery.

anyone else with this issue want to give it a try and report back?

I'm not sure what happened but usually my battery will last a full today but today it only lasted 5 hours! I all I have done recently was upgrade lockscreen info and pdanet.

I tried what you suggested but it didn't do anything for me. I need to stress that I've owned every iPhone since the 2G (some multiple times due to moving countries) and I've never seen battery drain like this.

Is it possible to downgrade to just straight 3.1 (on 3.1.2 right now) on a JB 3GS?

Thanks in advance

Try what I did in my post above. It's free and it worked for me.

I've been having some battery issues with 3.1.2 as well. There are times when my phone is just sitting idle and my battery will go down 1% every 20 minutes or so. I don't really have anything new installed that should drain the battery so I'm not sure what the culprit could be. I had downloaded the Auto-Lock toggle for sbsettings and had that running so I uninstalled it, but I can't see how a toggle would drain my battery.

Is there any kind of battery monitor that can project how much battery life you have left depending on what's running? In other words, is there an app that can tell you how your battery life will be affected if you enable/disable/install/uninstall certain apps?

i can confirm, for me at least, that it was rotation inhibitor in sbsettings that was killing my battery. ever since turning it off, my battery life has been back to pre-3.1.2 status.

Well it doesn't look like it was the auto-lock toggle that was causing my problem. I took my phone off the charger at 10:02 this morning and by 11:00am my battery was down to 96% even though it was idle the entire time - that falls pretty much right in line with what I posted last night. Troubleshooting issues like this is so difficult, but I'm hoping I can figure out the cause of the problem. I'm thinking that maybe my push gmail is the cause but I don't see anyone else reporting a problem with it. Anyway, these screenshots show what processes are running after a reboot - maybe one of you guys will see something in there that could cause the battery drainage.

Anyone else use Orbit? I am trying to think of new things that I have installed lately that could be causing my crazy battery drain issues and that is one of them. I hate to get rid of it though as I really do like it, plus i paid for it. :(

I am on 3GS with 3.1.2 as well. My battery life with 3.0 seemed to be much better as well, but I have installed some newer jailbroken apps since the upgrade as well so I am not sure if it is the firmware update or the new Cydia apps.

that pretty much sounds like normal iphone battery drain to me. my problem was 100% to 70% in that same hour with rotation inhibitor running. with it off, i only lose the 4-5% you are seeing.

This is probably extremely obvious, but the one thing that sucks my battery life like nothing else is when I leave location services on. Huuuuuge difference. Sometimes certain apps will ask to turn it on and I'll forget to turn it back off, and within a minute from unplugging it from the charger it starts to drain... quickly.

I'll have to check rotation inhibitor as well, but as far as I know it's not been a problem for me. Right now I can check emails & text for about an hour before it falls to 99%, and that's pretty good IMO. But once I hit that 50% mark, it falls much faster.... kinda like a gas tank. :p

4-5% per hour still seems high to me. I don't recall my battery draining this quickly before. I'm trying to uninstall certain programs to see if they have any effect on battery life. The most recent one I uninstalled is Kirikae but I haven't read anything about it negatively impacting battery life. I wish I knew what else to look for.

i agree. my phone use to be a champ, now im running to my car to charge it so it wont die.. but could it deal with the backgrounds and stuff running?

Well, I found what was causing it for me at least. I have a tab for SBSettings for turning on and off Safari DL. I was just leaving it turned to the "off" position so that I could stream Southpark episodes and watch them with the SP Central App from Cydia. I found that it was leaving it in this "off" position that was killing my battery. Now i just leave it "on" position and the battery is much better. Anyways, it really does seem that some of these toggles for SBSettings really can screw with the battery badly. I have not idea why though.
