Well, I found what was causing it for me at least. I have a tab for SBSettings for turning on and off Safari DL. I was just leaving it turned to the "off" position so that I could stream Southpark episodes and watch them with the SP Central App from Cydia. I found that it was leaving it in this "off" position that was killing my battery. Now i just leave it "on" position and the battery is much better. Anyways, it really does seem that some of these toggles for SBSettings really can screw with the battery badly. I have not idea why though.

Hmm - I have this toggle as well and mine is always off. How did you determine that having this toggle enabled (but with the actual Safari DL plugin turned off) was the cause of your battery drain? Are you certain it wasn't something else?

Just trial and error with elimination of other things. I left it "on" one morning and battery life was great sitting in my office. Turned it to "off" for the afternoon while still in my office and the battery drained like crazy. Put it back to "on" and battery life was much better again. Don't know why, but for my phone at least, that was the problem.

I can still use the toggle. I just leave it turned to "on" in SBSettings now except for the times when I know that I need it actually off. So far that has worked well.

poor coding. the toggles just activate mini-programs to perform specific tasks. safari dl was probably running continuously instead of just while safari is running, thereby draining your battery.

sbsettings isn't the problem, its the plug-ins that aren't well written. but since most (if not all) are free, i really can't complain. its not like i can code my own plug-ins.

Very interesting. I guess I'll try this myself to see if it helps. It doesn't really make sense that having it off would drain the battery but you can't argue with real-world results.

Does leaving safari tabs open drain the battery?

Not with Safari DL. It's a plugin for Safari so it doesn't actually "run". It only changes how safari handles mime types. Also, I don't know that this toggle should effect anything. I think it just renames/moves the plugin so it doesn't get loaded.

was just a guess, but why would it drain the battery when on but not off? same for me with rotation inhibitor, when on bad bat life, off it was just fine. but it doesn't happen with all toggles. something isn't right.

Any other new insights in why battery life is so horrible after upgrade to 3.1.2 on a jailbroken 3GS?

It was rotation inhibitor for me! I never would have guessed. Glad I found this thread. I hope that app/toggle gets an update...

My 3GS battery was draining 10-20%/hour. I uninstalled MobileSubstrate and Winterboard and the battery drain is back to normal.

Is there a way to turn of SBSetting for a day, i wud like to see how it fares without turning it on.
Cant even think of removing MobileSubstrate, tried to do it.. and it shows up atleast another 10 plugins in the removal list.

A lot yes, but not all. Mostly ones that need to run in the background or do special things (like quickreply).

That is really not an option then for me, since it is those programs that I mainly jailbreak my iphone for. I wonder whether the code for these programs need to be optimized.
