I have a hot take I would like someone to challenge me on -

I believe that (generally speaking) anyone who can afford an iPhone, but chooses to go with another brand is simple doing so for attention and to be ‘that guy.’

I concede that there are certain scenarios where someone may already be locked-in to an ecosystem or there is one specific, niche feature a person may need that iPhone does not offer and those people have a legitimate reason to choose another manufacturer … but writ large, I believe my take has legs.

Generally, I see it the opposite way. Apple is a status symbol to many. The only attention you get from being an Android user tends to be negative.

Android has tons of features that iOS doesn’t, sideloading being the biggest. You can run thousands of apps that aren’t on the Play store, including many Linux programs using a terminal emulator. Android is, in terms of the amount of things you can do with it, far more powerful than iOS. Google is even planning to ship laptops running Android this fall.

Also many choose Android for hardware features. If you want a foldable, 200MP cameras, stylus support, faster charging, fingerprint unlock, privacy display, etc. you can buy a Samsung phone. Other manufacturers offer other hardware features, so you can usually find a phone offering exactly what you want.

I have a Pixel 11 Pro Fold and an iPhone 17 Pro Max. It is possible that people actually enjoy products that aren't Apple products...

I shouldn't, but I'll bite...

Honestly I think your premise is flawed and likely based on a U.S. biased perspective. The rest of the world doesn't have dominant iPhone marketshare like the U.S. So there is much less of a "that guy" dynamic (if any at all).

There was a time in these forums (around the iPhone 4 and 4s) where the prevailing attitude of many users here was that if you did not own an iPhone, you were a nobody. iPhone owners were the cool people and the only ones worth talking to.

Now, you're implying that iPhone owners are the nobodies and that those seeking a different phone are the cool people. At least that's my take on it.

I've been here on this forum for 11 years now. My how it's changed. 😲

What if someone doesn't like IOS like that?

Or someone that just wants to drag and drop from computer to phone without the hassle of Icloud or Itunes?

Someone that wants Ublock Origin in the mobile browser such as edge and firefox, since IOS runs everything through the webkit.

Someone that doesn't want to pay for every damn app and might want to use some free apps

Someone that prefer google call screen over the half baked IOS implementation of it.

Someone that prefers google gemini over the half baked IOS version of it.

Someone that doesn't doomscroll on the phone all day,

someone that just wears a cheap amazfit or nothing watch for under 80 bucks

I don't see it like that at all. For reference, I have had iPhones since the 3GS (after I had the OG iPod touch), and I have strongly disliked every Android I've had to use.

It's all horses for courses. There is a small percentage of tech savvy users who find iOS too restrictive, and yearn to tinker with EVERYTHING with no safety, and chafe at even the thought of a walled garden! Android provides them with a much more comfortable environment. More power to them. Android is the right choice for them. Some were handed an Android for their first phone, and the effort to change is too high a barrier. Some prefer the more diverse offerings in the constellation of Android devices. Whatever it is, an Android phone is the right choice for many.

None of those things appeal to me. I love my iPhone, and I love how iOS works. I'm in the minority on this forum because I actually like iOS 26! At this stage, you'd have to pay me to use an Android. Even if I were given some 'droid flagship phone, I'd still stick to my iPhone 14!

Please let's not stoke the iPhone/Android holy war. The Mac/PC war was bad enough! (Glad I defected from XP though! 😂)
