That's the problem with society today though mate, people being afraid (for lack of a better word) of speaking up for fear of reprisal and, God forbid, violence/anger.

At the end of the day, you were skipped and while it's easy for me to sit here and say, "You should have said ...", not everyone can be outspoken. People nowadays are ignorant sods, and it's not getting any better unfortunately.

Fingers crossed you get your iPhone 3GS on your trip on Friday, but could you not perhaps pop into the store in advance and have an iPhone put by in your name, even if you pay the upgrade fee up front?

Exactly, people should care less about what others think and more about getting done what needs to be done. You don't go to a phone shop to make friends and get people to like you, you go to... Shock horror... Buy a phone!

Funny :D

But you sound a tad like the vicious type ;) :D

I'm not being funny, I'm serious. Who cares what random strangers in a phone shop think of you? As long as you come out with your new phone in hand, you've done what you came to do.

I'm not really vicious, I'm generally quite nice, but I do have a short temper :D

I read your post and I saw nothing wrong with what happened. Basically, the woman in the shop joined the queue while your back was turned, and took the last iPhone, and you are complaining that there were no iPhones in stock?

Sorry, but how is that their fault that there is a national shortage?

Just my two-penn'oth, but I thought the OP wrote an amusing post. It made me laugh, at least. He called the woman fat and the kid spoiled for comic effect -- nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. It certainly didn't deserve the righteous indignation that some of the above replies have contained...

If I'm reading correctly, the OP didn't want or expect sympathy for not getting a phone, he was relating an ironic and pathetic situation to make us laugh.

Comedy should push boundaries (of taste, decency and others) and if you don't like the joke, the best reaction is no reaction. No better way to piss on a bad joke than by ignoring it...

Again, just my opinion...

Steve.

But, You didn't make it clear how the woman and her kid :), jumped the queue. But I understand, with the layout of O2 stores, much like Apple's, it's kind of hit and miss whether you get an employee to talk to or you have to do some serious positioning and eye-catching and strong body language :D, plus you can't really cut in if they've already started interaction.

IMO in those stores, there is no formal queue.

...and that's one of the reasons why I generally try to avoid the Apple store at all costs.

The staff at the O2 store at least could have acknowledged OP's existence, even if they couldn't help him immediately. A simple, "I'm sorry sir; we're really busy right now, but someone will be with you in just a moment," can go a LONG way toward keeping waiting people calm and cheerful when other customers seem to be taking an eternity to make up their minds or just get the hell out of the way. :)

Ah, this must be British humor. Well, then, if it was humor, disregard my comments.

Also, if the line really reversed as he explained in further posts (he certainly didn't explain that in his OP, as others have also stated), then I sympathize. Nothing irritates me more than people who can't wait like the rest of us. The ME mentality.

However, I thought it was only us Americans who are rude. I didn't know it crossed over the pond, at least to England, where I always thought politeness was the rule (maybe I watch too much TV). Perhaps they were Americans that were in line with the OP? :) And that was a joke.

OP may have not been afraid. He may have just been executing good manners, like any upstanding British Citizen.

He wasn't shown good manners when he was skipped in the queue to be seen to be a store assistant, so why should those good manners be extended to the woman who skipped him?

I'm not talking about making a scene or being rude, and again that whole attitude is what is wrong with this country. A simple but sterm and polite, "Excuse me, I was here first" isn't too much these days surely?

If people find that rude, then this country is in a bigger state than I first thought.

Sorry, not sure if you've misunderstood the OP?

The opening words were that he went into his local o2 store. Your opening sentance and salvo against shopping in the Apple store is null and void in this "argument" because the OP has no issue with how he was treated at the Apple store, because he didn't go to the Apple store. His issue is with how he was treated at the o2 store.

Stop calling people fat.

Why? Is a black person not black? A white person not white? Or someone who smells smelly? Someone gay; gay?

Fat people are fat. Don't like being fat or think of it in a negative context, have them exercise just a tiny bit a day. Babysitting obese people's feelings makes them think it's ok to cause such a demand for hearts for transplants.

Just that morning my phone had frozen for 5 mins loading a simple text only google search and that was my motivation to finally bite the bullet and get an iPhone to kill 2 birds with 1 stone!

Well there you are then. If you'd used your stone to kill the attractive bird and the fat bird, you'd have got your iPhone.

He wasn't shown good manners when he was skipped in the queue to be seen to be a store assistant, so why should those good manners be extended to the woman who skipped him?

Sadly, when you do this, even if you are in the right, you do get a daggers look. Unfortunately, the propensity of people to be thoughtless, selfish and just bloody rude never ceases to amaze (and irritate) me. It's as though some people think they have a god-given right to be selfish, and if you whinge about it, you're in the wrong.

I'm with the OP on this one, to miss out because someone pushed in is a pain in the arse, and I'd be pissed off too.

But, mate, you should have said something...

It seems unrelated to everything else in the story. If he wrote a story about being annoyed because a fat guy sat next to him on a bus it'd be perfectly understandable.

By the way, does anyone know how many black people were in the store? The answer could change my opinion entirely.

I am well aware that the OP went into his O2 store. I said as much in my post. The comment about the Apple store was regarding the post that I quoted (which is, well, why I quoted that post in the first place)--that part of the problem could have been due to a setup at the O2 store similar to how Apple stores are run here; there's no real line or set person to go to when you know exactly what you need. You often have to meander around the place and make eye contact with several associates before finally barging up to one to ask if it would be possible to check out. It's really not very customer-friendly at all (or at least it isn't at my local Apple store. Dunno if people are nicer at other ones.)

Barkmonster mentioned the fat woman....

kane4fire said "what's the problem?"...

I mentioned it was irrelevant to the story...

..and then asked how many black people there were in the store...

Anyone who's still lost....... Idk.

Anyway, back on topic...

Has he mentioned how tall everybody was? If there were short people in the store that might explain a few things.

There are 3 problems/issues but only 2 are CAUSED BY others

Actually the problems I was referring to have nothing to do with others: sense of entitlement, being excessively judgmental, rudeness, petulance, and excessive focus on physical appearance. You didn't get an iPhone, and your response is to come on here and call a woman fat and her child spoiled and post about how outrageous it is that you, an established customer, couldn't get the phone you wanted when you wanted it. Those things are character defects in you, and have nothing to do with anyone else.

It's not so bad in my experience just as long as there are enough staff for the number of customers.

Also, the staff at the one I go to are very nice, I even have conversations with them about Apple stuff sometimes (which is awesome because if I have such a conversation with most other people, they'd tell me to shut up and that they have no idea what this 3.2GHz Intel Core 2 Quad thing I keep going on about is :p).

I would of been pissed too..... should of told fatty you would buy her a snicker bar if she let you have the iPhone.... would of worked without a doubt. For all you giving the guy guff for his story, if you don't like it don't read it.

Just a question

Barkmonster why were you not able to buy the phone at your 3:20 break, rather then waiting until the end of the day?
I can't see it now but I thought that you said that your existing phone locked up that day and it was the last straw.

Paul

Paul

I had 10 mins of my break left by then and I work on the 8th floor of an office block.

I'm definitely thinking lunchtime will be my best bet next time.

I know what 10 minutes means to a sales person in a phone shop or bank.

10 minutes trying to sell you up to a higher tariff/model of phone etc...

5 minutes trying to sell you insurance or other services

2 minutes filling in forms and stuff.

2 minutes while they finalise everything.

1 minute finally giving you the thing you asked for and kissing your arse so you're not annoyed about the other 15 minutes they wasted earlier :D

By the way, does anyone know how many black people were in the store? The answer could change my opinion entirely.

The sales person flirting with the girl was black, one of the other sales assistants was asian/indian and I think there was actually a ginger person who'd had the nerve to sneak in to the shop while I was there too. none of these things actually bother me personally... :p

My take after wasting 60 seconds of my life reading this embarrassment calling itself a MR thread...

People who work in phone stores often have no business being in that store and are severely deficient in the full range of social skills.

Likewise certain customers, as evidenced here.
