It seems to me apple IS the BIG LAGGARD in the industry... Im sure there are more informed people here that have their hands on this information...

For example OLED screens... Samsung has had them for ? Years?

How behind is apple on updates, 2015 Mac ? 2014 Mac mini? Apple TV not 4K?

What is a new product they are selling with at least two year old technology? Oh like the IPad Pro with Retina display?

Apple comes out with water resistant but 1 grade less that samsung?

Always behind... Except for the stock... APPLE flavored KoolAID is selling well!

I think using specs alone can sometimes be a little unfair. The iPhone 7 has 2gb RAM whilst the S7 Edge has 4 - but which is faster? They're also pretty busy deciding which door handles to use on the Apple Campus so don't be so hard on them about the updates.

It depends on your needs are too. for me I found Apple so far behind in portable workstations for my out of the office heavy lifting I was forced to change hardware quite aways back from my MacBook Pro's to well ... physically and spec wise larger units.

2011 for example, 10 bit IPS screen full aRGB gamut ( yeah its only 1080 but it was 2011 and the 2012 model of it was FAR better too )
32 GB Ram in laptop - 2011 ok same laptop as above
64 GB in a laptop - 2013 on desktop Xeon CPU oddly enough
64GB in more normal laptops, early 2016 ( mobile Xeon CPU's )

to this day I would need to haul a Mac pro 5,1 around in a van at half the speed because you cant do CUDA processing in the trashcan and the old rMBP with the 750 is WAY too freaking slow.

Mac Mini I just plain gave up on after my 2012 died, I can not downgrade to an anemic 2014 model and I still see no bump or replacement.

Apple TV ..... makes a great stand for our Xbox remote .... hasn't been fired up in atleast a year now, applications are so far behind, no 4K, and both the interface and usability is WAY behind other devices especially if you network stream a collection from your NAS or use good high compression codec's

only product im not laughing my ass off at the moment is the 5K iMac 27" for a great general purpose AIO, but if it kicks another fusion drive on me im either getting rid of it or installing my own SSD

Well, Apple was "behind" in releasing a music player too...we all know how that turned out.

Slight alteration. The iPhone 7 Plus has 3 GB of Ram aside from the 2GB you mentioned. I don't think it's necessarily about being faster as it more efficient on how the phone multi-tasks with refreshes. The refresh rate is more of a fair comparison than speed is in terms of Ram management.

Apple seems to always hold back and not be on the bleeding edge - yes there's exceptions to that, but generally speaking they take an existing product and improve it slowly.

and it's that slowness, that leaves them behind..

I know Apple just wants their stuff to work and that's good instead of rushing out the door, only to apply heaps of fixes, but they could pick up the pace a bit.

Ya know, slowness, is one thing, but to release the SAME phone for 3 years... and "stuff to work"... I'm so shaken buy the amount of Iphone issues that I have elected to hold off... and some of the problems are real, NOT just isolated problems of one individual...

My son is a former apple employee, and he knows the guys on the inside... THEY are even shaking in their boots... The only thing keeping apple alive is there are no better options...

The "SAME" phone was released for 3 years (or even 2)?

As a general rule of thumb, Apple don't release something until it's "ready" - they're rarely early adopters. Some exceptions, like retina displays etc though.

That double ram really makes a difference...

I think the biggest problem Apple has with implementing any new technology is that it has to be available in large enough quantities to outfit 80 million iPhones in a single quarter. So any new emerging technology is automatically out of the question. Maybe the delay with OLED was that Apple simply didn't couldn't procure sufficient quantities for all their devices.

They are releasing new things:
- no 3.5mm audio jack
- crippled home button
- vibrating 'haptic' gimmick
- anything you loved no longer works as it used to
- almost everything now requires a monthly paid subscription
- new cases because the old ones will not work anymore
- many new dongles and adapters
- no discount from carriers to buy the new phone under contract
- disposable battery and almost everything else
-shorter lighting cable
- beats multi billion dollar deal EarPods
I don't like any of them, but if new is what you asked for, they got it all brand new magically amazingly geniusly created; designed in California, cheaply made in China, and overpriced.

What's crippled about it?
It doesn't move, fake motor vibration to provide some mechanical feedback, it's one of the worst Apple gimmicks to emulate the button response, whomever came with that nonsense shall be removed from any upcoming Apple project.

To provide waterproofing there are plenty of other ways, a freaking sealed button will work.

It doesn't move,
So it doesn't move but it still functions as the prior version does, doesn't it? I have an SE so I don't have this and I'm trying to get my head wrapped around that its crippled.

Is your point that it doesn't move at all?

"My home button broke!!" has been a frequent complaint on the forums here over the past several years, so I'm not entirely sold on the idea that "waterproofing" was the only reason for the home button redesign.

Were you around when the Mac news sites were doing stories about a significant number of folks in China enabling Assistive Touch on their older iPhones "to preserve" their home buttons?

As for haptic feedback, ... that's a great example of Apple being "behind". The iPhone caught crap on a regular basis here for not having it (as many Android models have had it for years). Now it's finally here, and some folks think it's a gimmick. Talk about being damned if you do and damned if you don't. o_O

IMO, it feels different... the haptic feedback doesn't feel the same as the mechanical button press.

Took me a few days for it to become the "new normal". Haven't noticed it since then.

it doesn't, just activates on the pressure sensitive material it's made of. It energized a motor vibrating and providing some feeling, which is way off where the "home button" is.
It's a significant subpar gimmick.
I've played with the 3 level setting and it's the same, a constant battle between Siri, going home or the 'double click'. Whatever i'm trying to do is not what it does. It's random and not what we are used to from Apple products.

The iPhone 4 Home Button had a quality problem, therefore it failed, debris accumulated and yes we did enable Assistive Touch as a workaround when it failed. It doesn't justify changing the design to what it is now. In my personal experience all other iPhone models I had used their Home Buttons worked fine: original iPhone, 3G, 3GS, 5, 5S, 6, 6+, 6S. The Touch ID functionality is great.
The current implementation for "Home Button" in the 7, 7+ is terrible.
You will expect having the haptic feedback spot on where you depress the "Home", not on the sides, at the edge of the phone or the sides all around except where you depress the "home button", it's like something is loose inside the iPhone.
[doublepost=1487636476][/doublepost]Also it would be interesting to know or measure the impact on battery life and energy consumption caused by moving the motor everytime you use the "Home Button" gimmick.
