I mention to stuff at work to say, that I get my work done faster and on deadline when I am at home in front of my 27" iMac. I tell students and colleagues alike that if you have to buy a Mac for low to mid-range video/media production get the best 27" iMac you can afford. Otherwise, get a PC workstation.

Apple has pretty much made it a total waste of money to build a high end post house on entirely Apple products . . . . which WAS possible just a few years ago.

I'd love to hear what you guys have as an Apple ecosystem and how it works. Additionally, if you have any suggestions on how to improve even further my ecosystem please let me know, suggestions are always welcome :)

I won't go into detail of what I've owned in the past as that doesn't seem to the the question, i.e., Macintosh SE/30, Bondi Blue iMac, etc.

I currently have the following apple gear.
  • 2 iPhone 5s (not 5s but multiple fives ;) ) One for me and one for the wife.
  • 2 first gen iPads
  • 3 iPad minis (one for me, and two for my kids)
  • 2009 Mac Mini for my kids
  • 2010 13" MBP for my wife
  • 2012 15" rMBP for me
  • 2 Air port Extremes

As for integration, most of the macs and iOS devices use my apple id so the apps are purchsed under my account. The exception of course is the stuff for my wife where she has her own apple id.

Looking at swapping my asks rt-n56u to a AirPort Extreme as well though.

iMac has external had with films t Apple TV streams as well as music.
iTunes Match across all devices to stream music when not at home
 
For those who have more than one laptop and one desktop:
Are these *personnaly* yours, or belong to family members? If not, how do you manage around more than 2 computers? Was wondering out of curiosity.

I have a MacBook Pro, an iPad (4th generation) and an iPhone (4S).
I want to get the cheapest air, so I can mess with it, and maybe take some of Apple's training programs with it. Don't want to do experiments with mine :p
Also planning to get 5S on release.

I wish I could get an iMac, but dorm rooms are pretty limited space-wise :eek:. Probably will get one when I get my own place.

So yeah I guess my family's Apple ecosystem is pretty expansive.

Edit: I only listed devices we actually use. I have many more old Apple devices that sit in disuse (but still function!)

For me it depends on the job. I personally own and use most of what's on my list save for the 24" iMac and 13" Macbook Pro that my wife uses.

Some of the hardware is used when I am on location and need a few assistant editors, sometimes it's me using multiple machines to handle multiple tasks on location.

It's a somewhat similar situation in a studio or back at the home office. An assistant will be using one machine, while I use the others, or I have different machines handling different tasks at the same time.

For me, getting multiple machines to do many medium weight tasks was a bit more cost effective than getting one $7000 workstation to do them all at once, and at times, I needed the machines to come with me, so multiple laptops it was.

How does, "How big is your ecosystem?" translate into "Not what you've owned in the past," especially if you actually use the hardware in your list? I've always been a proponent of buying and using older hardware if you can find use out of it.

Lucky for me I didn't list the 12" Powerbook G4, iBook G4, 15" iMac G4, and Bondi blue that I don't use or don't have. Some folks DO have and use that much gear.
