How can I get a Mac?

-included software-osx, imovie, iphoto, itunes, idvd, garageband, quicktime, addressbook, all included free on a mac, windows software packages of this caliber would cost hundreds

Perhaps I should have said I was lurker. Anyway I would plan on using it for Music,Web,School Projects, and Games maybe (Sims 2?). Perhaps iMovie and Garageband. Definately iPhoto because I have a digital camera I would like to use. Hope that summerizes it.

In your situation, I would recommend the iBook. You can get it with a 12'' or 14'' screen. Check it out.

unless it a 1.42 ghz
i would reccomend a powerbook if you have the cash
or a g4 powermac (will do everything perfectly and its easily upgradable)

If you would like a desktop or a notebook. A good desktop would be a used Powermac G4, they are still some what powerful and is a great starter mac. Well what is you budget? A new one would be good because you can have lots of software titles and is perfect for a beginner, like flying lama siad an ibook probably would be perfect in your pricerange.
Arguments for: No Viruses is huge. You're saving money right off the bat not having to worry about a Norton subscription or whatever, and it's a nice feeling of safety.
Depending on your age and what your parents want you to be doing, hyping the creative possibilities of iMovie and Garage Band is worthwhile as well--there are no equivalently cheap and easy programs on Windows, and you can learn a lot from either.
For you a MacMini probably isn't the best option unless price is a major factor (even then, spending just a bit more on a refurb iMac G5 or iBook is still a better idea) or you already have a very nice monitor. This is based on your mention of Garage Band and iMovie (and games).
If this is a Christmas thing (I assume it is), go for it. If not, it might be worth holding out until January to see if anything shiny and new comes out, but I probably wouldn't wait were I in your shoes.

Good recommendation, unless you never intend to use it as a portable, in which case an iMac might be a good alternative (particularly if you ever do get into video editing or Garage Band--the bigger hard drive and faster processor will help). I don't really need a portable. I would kinda prefer new since it's easier. I was thinking a iMac G5 would be good. I only have a $100 set aside and it's not much. Also I was in the CompUSA last weekend playing of course with the macs. So I was messing with the new 17in iSight and my dad comes over to tell me lets go. He then sees i'm playing with a mac. He says "Geez are you gonna be a Mac Freak!?" I was so sad. They're PCers all the way.

I feel for ya. Don't get down. I can tell you know what is good when you see it. I have used macs for many years, i still have to use PCs at school and i can't stand them, they are so clunky and slow. In comparison i use the 1ghz PCs at school, and i use a 1ghz emac at home, I the speed difference is huge. The mac runs when better.
Tell them u want a mini.....they might think since its only the box and will be cheaper if u got it than a full pc.

my parents always used pcs
so i bought them an ibook on yea they love it and still use pc for email
they will be completly switched over by the end of the yea (no pc using for them)

How about you tell us what their reasons for disliking Macs are. I'm willing to bet they're just the same BS that's been getting spread around for the last 5 years.
SO TRUE... my dad started using Macs in 1984 when they were introduced. He used Macs as his main system up until a a few years ago when he got heavy into Linux. Now he runs mostly PCs (Mix of Windows and Linux) and only keeps a few Macintosh machines around. How does someone make that switch, I wouldn't know. My dad thinks I am nuts for wanting to go into networking and loving macs like I do, but I figure I could SSH into Unix servers from a PowerBook, so I would not be missing much
Anyhow.. hopefully your dad lets you get what you want. I won't have a new Mac for another six months, but it gives me something to look forward to
Good luck.. maybe you will convert your parents into the Mac world, and I need to work on converting my father back. It is sad to see the X serve at his office that is not even being used.

Free alternatives would be fine as long as it's word and Powerpoint compatible. The "mac freak" comment really hurt. I still remember playing with the G4 iMacs at compusa a few years ago they were the best. too bad I didn't know what they were then.

Because your parents are obviously going to try and steer you away from the Mac, you need to take matters into your own hands. Save about $300 and get a decent used G4 Powermac off ebay (Dual-500 Mhz up to maybe single processor 773 Mhz at that price). Or save $600 and get a mini and a memory upgrade. I would go with the G4 Powermac if it were me for lots of reasons: upgradeable video card, room for lots of ram, option for various PCI cards, upgradeable processor, easier to use dual-monitors, among others.
Sure, the older machines won't run the latest games, but for almost all other tasks, the machine will feel zippy enough (edit--you also will have trouble with multi-track audio recording and video editing--both will be slower, and somewhat limited)

I really wouldn't be heart broken if I could not play sims because I already have the PC version. Actually I was suprised it runs well enough on a 1500+(yes the one from 2001!) with Geforce 4 4200 Ti. I just want a mac so bad!! If it was only my mother i could convince her because she doesn't know a thing bout comps. Darn Dad!
