I would consider the iMac G5. If I was a few years older and into a career, (so much more money coming in, more to spend), I would even consider getting one for my parents this Christmas. My mother has no idea whatsoever about computers, but I feel I could teach her on one of those babies and she would love it.

Unlikely for now and by the time I am in that position, it would probably be too late for my mother, (she gets more technophobic as time goes on, even though she's only 52), but that is a great example of how good the machine is.

Failing that, go on and on about the Quad core PowerMac G5 and 30" display, then eventually say you'll settle for a 17/20" iMac and hopefully that would work. ;)

It's never too late.

My Mom is 72 and uses an iMac Bondi. She bought it new when it came out. I had it running OSX but my brother couldn't get her printer to work, so he reformats it and reinstalls OS9... that's another story.

Monksmac, keep your chin up and arm yourself with what the folks are telling you and keep saving your money. If you don't get a Mac for Christmas, start cutting grass this spring and buy your own. My son saved up enough for a MacMini last summer.

Edit: you could also hint to the Grandparents for money, too.

Tell them that every major creative university that takes themselves seriously uses macs. Every major design house and advertising agency uses macs. If you were to apply at any of these buisnesses they will both expect you to use a mac and will laugh at you if you cant. Im sorry to be blunt and Im sure you know this, but your fathers mindset is a true dinosaur and will only hurt him.

Yea i guess i'll keep saving if I don't get one for christmas. I feel like i could slap myself. I should have asked my father today if I could get a computer. I was off for a freak snow day.:) So i was outside wrapping hose pipes when he left.

haha I know what you mean
but as for the convincing your parents thing. Well about this time last year I started getting into macs (I've never had one before) and my parents all they knew about macs was that they have a compeletly different operating system and they thought that you had to control the computer by typing in commands hahaha (but they werent much of computer people anyway). So for about a year I've been researching and printing out all this stuff for my parents to read about macs and I'm proud to say that today my powerbook came in the mail :) but I cant open it till christmas :( damn.
So keep trying and they'll get over it. Anyway, its not like its going to be their computer!

Start an illegal Mac Mini raffle, and sell 100 raffle tickets for $10-15.

Give away one, keep the other.

Get a job. Buy it yourself. Be grateful you have parents that keep a roof over your head & stop conniving like a spoiled brat.

When I wanted a new computer as a teenager because I was tired of the Apple IIe my parents bought when I was 4, I worked for it, bought it, and it was all mine. $2000 in 1991 (equivalent to ~$2800 today, enough to buy a pretty loaded G5 or powerbook.)

Work for it. It's way better that way, trust me.

Sounds like a good idea at first, but then you have to sit back and realize how much trouble this kid is having getting just one person to like macs.
