Can't say as I've ever considered any OS exciting
So asking how iOS can be exciting again doesn't really resonate with me
If we’re talking about mass-market (consumer) “excitement” then I totally agree with you.

I think operating systems can only really be thought of as “exciting” (one only even then in an esoteric sort-of way) when new. iOS is old, however.

How can iOS become "exciting" again?

You shouldn't even notice the OS, it should be simple, intuitive and get out of the way to let you do what needs to be done. Every time you notice the OS it has failed to do its job right. Steve Jobs got this. Tim Cook does not get it. iOS has become "stale" because it's constantly throwing more and more stupid things in your face. I don't remember anyone asking for more emojis, yet that seems to be the flagship feature every time. So now we have a horrible bug-infested bloated mess of an iOS with plenty of emojis to take our minds off it.

But, to play your game, how about some nice elegant and intuitive visuals instead of this ugly flat nonsense. They really had to change the app store logo to take out that last bit of style they accidentally left behind. Just google iOS6 home screen and compare what that looked like to today. It was an "exciting" looking OS back then. Now it looks like bland washed out garbage.

When Apple tries to make iOS "exciting", they add stuff like animated poop emojis or fireworks in messages. Personally I don't care for any of this at all. I want iOS to be stable, fast and intuitive. The less I notice it, the better it is.

When you say, “again”, what event or time period are you referring to?

The introduction of the original iPhone? Some time since?

My take: iOS is now a mature platform and any further excitement will come from apps.
For me personally, the excitement came with the introduction of a fundamental feature of a smartphone I didnt ever think I would need, but now, cant live without. Not all of these have to be Apples design, they can be later implementations - but I love the addition of said feature to the OS.

Only a handful of these come to mind:
- Unified App store
- Multi touch
- iCloud
- Visual Voicemail
- Apple Music

I would say the iOS7 appearance overheal was definitely fresh, but for a lot of people it was definitely not exciting.

Do you think we have hit a plateau where the OS has matured past the point of these breakthrough exciting features? :(:apple:

Screw "exciting". New things are exciting, and then they become old things, and so boring. It's a never ending cycle of chasing new features.

Just giving me rock solid, buttery smooth experience, like I used to have.

Believe or not I think windows mobile OS has some good points that are worth considering. The home screen UI looks great with the tiles. And almost all their buttons icons are aligned at the bottom, very easy to reach with one hand/thumb.

Now their mobile os is cumbersome overall and I prefer iOS but I give credit where credit is due.

YouTube competitor?

Yeah just for fun lol.

Could tie in with their TV service.

Basically contend with google services even more which they have pretty much 0 presence in the video content area.

Honestly it's because google made a change making it so apps that allowed youtube to play in the background not allowed in the app store anymore. Only way to do this is to pay for youtube red. Plus I hear youtube hasn't been taking care of their content creators. Would be interesting to see apple disrupt that part of the industry.

That would be "exciting".

  • Star wars AR stickers.
  • Star Wars animoji's.
  • Being able to produce the best pictures with only one camera instead of 2.
  • iPhone XC in multiple colors, using plastic making it cheaper and more "fun".
  • Collaborate with Canon or some other respectable camera company and pushing mobile photography to another level
  • Make Siri useful
  • Make MAPS a lot more useful
  • Make apple music more social
  • Add notifications for playlists we follow on apple music when they get updated

I'll add more later.

Oh make it so we're not thinking in the back of our minds our shiny iphone x's won't turn into junk once the battery degrades.

Further splitting off and tailoring the iPad version would be one thing, probably a lot of nice things they could then do to the tablet software - multitasking and making better use of space. As for iPhones, well the X interface is a step in the right direction to what had become a bit of a muddle of ad-hoc features, but it’s still very unpolished.

A good file browser, i’d like to have one point from which I can reach my files on my iOS device as well on my shares as well as on cloud services. It should also be possible to open a file from a cloud or a share directly from an app. Now we are dependent on individual apps to make the necessary changes to accomplish this.
