As stated in 7,583,290,501 other threads...OSX runs better with at least 1 gig of ram. 512 is the bare minimun that OSX will run on.
While I heartily agree, an old G4 in the house has only 128.

but i want aps to start quickly the first time
i dont want to spend $ on 2gb of ram then wait 15s for MS word to boot up while in class.

Try OmniGroup's OmniOutliner for taking notes in class.

While the initial post sounds a bit embellished (regarding times) I have to agree with the sentiment.

512 megs of RAM is not nearly enough, so I bought a gig stick and now have 1.25 gigs of RAM (have been using it for almost four months now). My MacBook may not chug, but it definately does not scream. Even when I was first using it, my macbook didn't "scream". Don't get me wrong, it is plenty fast for what I do daily, but it doesn't make me sit up and say "Wow, that was snappy!"

The boot time is the only thing that continually surprises me speed wise (even with my 5400 rpm hd). Only with the first revision PM G5 did I really feel amazed by the speed, but that is how it should be: the professional line should scream and the consumer line should be just a damn good product. By and large, that's what Apple produces.

I kinda wish this wasn't the case expecially with the portables, because they seem to drop proformance wise as the years go on, and im all about keep my stuff as long as i can. I have a compaq destop that i bought in 98, still chugging along with a 700 mhz processor a 400mb of memory, it makes me laugh to thing that it still working pretty well. I wish the portables came with standard config but with a wider expandable option to upgrade. Macbooks want to scream to lol

With 2gb of ram, applications do not boot quicker (ie same number of bounces) but i can run MORE apps with less lag. (i can also run more widgets too)

Boot time does not even increase.

Generally speaking, it doesn't, but there are 2 cases that it does.

1. You ran the application before, and it is not kicked out of the ram yet.
2. You don't have enough ram, so they computer starts to page out part of the application, then load your applications in.

Is there a way to KICK it out of the ram without restarting? Say afterclass, i would like to do away with MS Word, and i dont want it hogging my memory etc.

My MB has 2GB ram and it definitely screams. It is a noticeable difference from my 12" Powerbook.

It won't hog any memory. If an application is unloaded, it will usually still be present in cache, which means it can be (re)booted quickly. However, if that part of the cache is necessary for another application, it will be used. You won't notice any difference from the previous application not being in the cache.
