"Hanns·G HW191D / 19" Wide / 5ms / 700:1 / WXGA 1440 x 900 / DVI-D / Widescreen LCD Monitor" for $187.97 CDN. From 111 reviews, it has received a 5-star rating and the comments have been great. Now I know you're not going to get the Apple or Dell quality out of a "Hanns G" monitor, but if you just compare spec-wise... how can this monitor be so cheap? What's wrong with it? What is it missing (from a monitor perspective, USB / FireWire ports don't count ;)).

Just curious as to if I'm missing something or if this really is an amazing deal.

I recently saw a 19 inch gateway monitor go for 170 dollars. It's a great price considering I had the 21 inch $500 version and it ran great. Prices are just falling. Always check www.dealnews.com for some good prices

Usually 19" widescreens that cheap don't have DVI ports but it does. They can't make it too expensive because it's not a big name in the world of LCDs.

Hrmpff... I don't suppose dealnews.com has an equivalent Canadian site? A lot of those deals apply to American stores only and I have a feeling the lot of them don't ship to the great white north.

Actually, I have been buying a few monitors in the $185-$235 range for a couple months now. Price difference is due to analog/digital. Seems like there is a small price war going on. It could be off-shore startups dumping stuff 'at cost', or at very small margins.

i bought a acer 19inch for $220 a couple months ago, its only vga but it still has realy good quality

I run two of those at my office on a dual g4.

They're VERY good monitors, and they're very cheap too.

The build quality isn't brilliant, but its much better than you'd expect for the price.

They come with VGA cables, but you can use DVI if you wish. They have built-in speakers, but I've not bothered trying them yet.

You'll probably get Dell quality :D
The quality is probably OK - they make sure to scrub the blood of the Chinese workers off the monitors before packaging to prevent any chance of electrical shorts or corrosion etc. And with the much more forgiving environmental regulations in China, they are able to use higher quality lead, mercury, arsenic, chemical solutions, etc. which results in a higher quality end product.

Perhaps I`m missing something but crappy Dell quality? I`ve got a 2005FPW and it is absolutely fantastic - no problems whatsoever. Have there been problems with the 2007`s?

its prob a piece of trash, who the heck has heard of hanns G?

Keep in mind that "Haans G" only makes the bezel and puts the components together. The actual LCD display is usually made by one of the few LCD manufacturers out there - Samsung, LG, etc. The brand might be no name, but the screen is made by the same company as every other LCD out there.

I'm about to get one from Amazon.co.uk it costs £140, an excellent deal (though Apple have got more of my money in DVI to VGA adapters for the thing)

I'm just poking fun at Dell. Mrs. Carl Spackler uses Dell's at work and every single one has gone back with issues, though these are laptops. However, I do understand the Dell monitors offer a great bang for the buck. I'm researching monitors for video editing and have decided on the 23" Apple or 23" Sony PremierPro. Now only if my wallet would agree.

I would easily recommend a Dell monitor for everyday use gaming and movie watching, but not color critical work.

Seems like you can't go wrong these days with cheap monitors. I bought a "Vision" 17" LCD for $99 after $120 off via rebates. DVI and VGA, plus built in speakers. It's great for my needs.

Like the original poster I have been stumped buy the same low price point of late on some monitors for example, I am realy thinking of decorating my desktop with a couple of these http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2433697&CatId=0
when my new Mac Pro comes home :D.

The price one the O.P.s monitor is very good, considering I picked up a 19" Viewsonic for my beter half for Christmas last year, and it was over 400.00 CDN.

Any one have a link to a site with good reviews of LCDs? I have had a bugger of time trying to find a decent site.

Hmm for what ever reason, the link I posted the first time around didn't work, my post might make a bit more sense now with the link to "these" in it.

I recently bought a couple of Samsung 940BW 19" widescreen LCD's for $180 after rebates. They're incredible monitors too, first LCD's I've ever owned and I must say, I made a great choice. 1440x900, DVI and VGA, 4ms response, really small bezel.

They're back up to $270 at CompUSA, but it would be worth keeping an eye on them for future sales. :)

Well my monitor (http://www.play.com/Electronics/Ele...GHW191_19_Widescreen_TFT_Monitor/Product.html) arrived this morning, and although I'm not really giong to play until I get into my new house on Friday it seems a good monitor on the whole - it's advertised as having headphone sockets, but doesn't seem to - but that's something I'm not dead worried about (and am quite possibly just skimming over at the moment)

The colours aren't great, but again - only had it hooked up to the 360 so there's no auto-calibration there, if I get bored later I might hook it up to my Macbook and see what the colour calibration tools can do for me - overall though VERY happy with it for the price.
