P4's with hyperthreading are just plain pathetic. They get less than 1/2 the performance of a core duo in a desktop processor. They've disabled hyperthreading in pretty much all of the new line, so this isn't a problem anymore :)

i have a 3.2p4 HT laptop pc and a 1.83ghz macbook.. The macbook when its running OSX is way faster espcially with the boottime.

Even when the mac is running windows its still a very quick machine quicker than the p4 in most things. (wow runs at a better framerate on the p4 cus its got a 9700 64mb in, but then it uses a higher native res than the macbook so the framerate isnt that much better)

boottime to osx on the macbook is compareble to the boottime of my desktop pc to windows (and that has raptors in) and boottime to xp on the mac is still pretty quick (not as fast as osx though)

compated with my g4 1.5ghz mini... well the macbook leaves it standing.

Im tempted to throw some video encoding at the macbook and see how it handles it.

Just becuase the Cpu speed sounds slow on the macs (low ghz numbers) believe me they are anything but slow.

I have 2 cars, both have 2 litre, 4 cylinder engines that rev to 9000rpm. I cannot add them together to make a F1 beating 4 litre, v8 engine that revs to 18000rpm.

Dual Core is like this, not Apples in boxes.

you kinda can, (not the rpm part) triumph did that with their 1.5l straight 4 to make a 3 liter V8 in the 70's, it just takes allot of work and engineering, and smart did a similar thing with the smart roadster, which is two straight 3 engines mated to make a V6.

anyway the get who said a dual core 2GHz mac is 4GHz, which it's not, and i won't repeat all the points as said before.

Single core HT P4s are usually neck and neck with Pentium Ds (dual cores obviously), but each has an edge in different areas. Apps that are written to take advantage of 2 threads usually perform better on the PentD but single threaded apps (that can still take advantage of HT since it's essentially software emulated) perform better on the P4 HT.

I google'd this the other day to see whether or not I should upgrade my cpu in my PC while waiting for the Mac Pro release. I decided against doing it because a) PentDs are trash and b) it wouldn't be worth buying a new mobo + new ram to upgrade my PC to a Conroe or new cpu + ram to get a A64 X2.

Pentium D is also a relative of the Netburst architecture that Intel have dropped like a stone. Stands to reason that the performance is less than stellar.

I would never buy a dell, had one prior to my mac and nothing but horrible problems!
