I noticed this straight away, and it looks so much better with the lug showing at the bottom and the top.

How comes the Nike sport loop has a visible lug at the top, whereas the standard sport loop doesn’t?

The Nike sport loops have a new, separate design to differentiate the Nike branded bands from the linup and play into Nike's design language more if I had to assume. I doubt it's more than that, just a new design.
The new design along with the big spend on research and development for new manufacturing processes on not just the Nike Sport Loop but the Sport Loop, Nike Sport Band, Alpine Loop, (and a few others I'm sure) makes me curious about how true the rumors of a new band mechanism really are. Why spend all that money on R&D just to make it all obsolete the next year?
