Just because IOS 18 is available on an older iPad, you don't have to install it if you dont want to as it will probably slow down the device considerably. I can install IOS 18 on my ipad air 3 (A12 chip) but will leave it on ios 17.7 which is quite stable and weeks long battery life on standby.

Looking at support from Apple purely based on specs is going to frustrate people. There is a long history of them dropping support even though we all know the hardware is likely capable of running the latest operating system for the device.

The better way to view it is based on the last time they introduced and sold the item.

Yes it sucks, but its part of their business model.
I knew I responded here before, but this is all one needs to understand when it comes to software support from Apple.

The best way to look at it is between initial release date and date it was discontinued. Apple actually has a pretty good track record when it comes to these things. The last major hardware they dropped OS updates quickly was on the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, but it was clear by then that those 4GB and 8GB models were basically unusable with how quickly iPhone OS and the App Store had grown.

The 3G more than the OG iPhone, don’t forget that the 3G is the only iPhone in existence that support ended literally halfway throughout iOS 4’s timeline (lol)

Also to your words about initial date and date of discontinuation isn’t necessarily true, for example the iPad Air 2 was discontinued when the 5th Gen iPad came out all those years ago with iOS 10 and it still managed to survive until iPadOS 16 came out in October 2022 but the iPod touch family ( especially the 4th and 7th Gen iPod Touch’s) are a good example when they got discontinued weeks before WWDC of those years and they got dropped support.

Also iPod Touch 2G unfairly getting the iPhone 3G treatment of not getting iOS 4.3

Just thought of this thread again today. Still happy with iPadOS 17 and not sure I'm missing out on anything important. Will probably use my 10.5-inch for at least another year, then see what happens.

I am also still using this iPad without problems. During the last few months I noticed a significant worsening of the battery, often needing a charge after few hours of use. The most recent update 17.7.3 seems to have improved that considerably, so my use is now similar to that one year ago again. I hope for more 17.7.x updates for security and battery improvements and plan to use it at least until end of 2025.

A better question is directed to users who bought the iPhone X…. The iPhone only stuck on iOS 16 and has the A11 which unites the 6 cores, has an ANE, and the processor being 10nm and this iPad which has a quad core A10 ( which runs dual core between the performance and efficiency cores because they do not unify), the A10 running on TSMC’s 16nm as well as that iPad being compatible with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light but the iPhone isn’t) is a much bigger embarssment than A10X iPads not getting iPadOS 18. Yes it’s unfortunate but the A10X iPads have excelled 7 major OS Updates ( besides the base OS) while the budget iPad needs 5 major ones ( that may change with the 9th or 10th gen iPad)

App Support wise considering OS’s 18 dropped the A10X iPad and the 6th gen one and if OS 19 just drops 7th gen iPad only then App Support technically will be the same because no iPhones were and will be affected, but compared to the iPhone X and 2 major OS’s apart between the X and the 7th gen iPad, App Support will be more better for the iPad 7😁
