Just because IOS 18 is available on an older iPad, you don't have to install it if you dont want to as it will probably slow down the device considerably. I can install IOS 18 on my ipad air 3 (A12 chip) but will leave it on ios 17.7 which is quite stable and weeks long battery life on standby.

Looking at support from Apple purely based on specs is going to frustrate people. There is a long history of them dropping support even though we all know the hardware is likely capable of running the latest operating system for the device.

The better way to view it is based on the last time they introduced and sold the item.

Yes it sucks, but its part of their business model.
I knew I responded here before, but this is all one needs to understand when it comes to software support from Apple.

The best way to look at it is between initial release date and date it was discontinued. Apple actually has a pretty good track record when it comes to these things. The last major hardware they dropped OS updates quickly was on the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, but it was clear by then that those 4GB and 8GB models were basically unusable with how quickly iPhone OS and the App Store had grown.

The 3G more than the OG iPhone, don’t forget that the 3G is the only iPhone in existence that support ended literally halfway throughout iOS 4’s timeline (lol)

Also to your words about initial date and date of discontinuation isn’t necessarily true, for example the iPad Air 2 was discontinued when the 5th Gen iPad came out all those years ago with iOS 10 and it still managed to survive until iPadOS 16 came out in October 2022 but the iPod touch family ( especially the 4th and 7th Gen iPod Touch’s) are a good example when they got discontinued weeks before WWDC of those years and they got dropped support.

Also iPod Touch 2G unfairly getting the iPhone 3G treatment of not getting iOS 4.3
