Well IEatApples .......... your guess was absolutely PERFECT.
I executed the commands, logged out, restarted my iMac, and voila.

After many weeks I can open the HD and retrieve its valuable contents therein.
Your blood is worth bottling and I cannot express how much I value and appreciate your gem of knowledge my friend.

As they used to say in the good old days: "you are forever in my debt" (although I have no cash).

Regards, Jim.
I'm glad I could be of help! :)

+ You should thank BlueRevolution as well! ;)

P.S.: I think this:
(although I have no cash)
is the reason for this:
you are forever in my debt
:D:p

locked external hard drives

Been to the Genius Bar several times and no luck with unlocking my two Drobos with 16,000 photos. YUCK! Thanks to IEatApples and Angelwatt I used Terminal and am ever-so-happy and into my photos again.

I can't thank all who contributed enough.

I'm glad I could help! :)

… I still find it "odd" that Apple hasn't fixed this issue yet? I imagine there are a lot of frustrated people out there being told (by Apple) to reformat their drives & in the process loose everything they had on them.

Anyway, that's why I was quick to add the solution to all the threads I could find regarding this issue, and I hope it can help those in need! ;)

Can't unlock external WD hard drive

Can't unlock or change permissions on our hard drive. We check and the lock icon in get info is unlocked and have check all folders. We follow some steps of this thread add have gotten this code:

drwxrwxrwx 28 1020 Sep 29 13:34 LeRoy

What should we try from here to unlock it?

I found a solution that worked.

In Terminal type the following sequence (obviously replace "Volumename with the name of your volume):

sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/Volumename

i tried those commands but i still get the permission denied messages in terminal. its really odd considering the info pane shows that everyone and my user account have read/write access, including all subfolders and files.

Do not have sufficient Permissions on External Drive

I can't access my external WD MyBook USB (Mac OS Ext. Journaled) drive on OSX 10.5.8. Can anyone walk me through. I went to get info - all privileges have "custom" and "everyone"'s privilege is "No Access" and I can unlock panel, but cannot modify settings.

terminal line referring to drive

drw-rw----@ 43 1530 Nov 1 14:17 MyBook01

The answer is simple:

In Terminal type the following sequence (obviously replace "Volumename with the name of your volume):

sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/Volumename

First of all: What's the name of your HD?

- Then simply put that name into the "sudo code" above instead of "Volumename". :)

- If this doesn't work: Please tell me the name of your HD, + let me know if you understand how to use Terminal. ;)

hello
i am havin trouble unlocking my external disk (ntfs) one

I have macfuse and ntfs 3g downloaded .if someone could take me step by step to read n write plizz

External Mac Drive unlockable also

I have an external SeaGate firewire drive that is my Time Machine back up drive. It says "The folder “SEA_DSK” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents." When I get info on it it says custom in privileges and has a padlock on its icon. Unlocking it in get info does nothing and the privileges won't change from custom they just pop back. I notice some people show a similar problem here. Can anyone help me? I am not sure what to do in Terminal for this particular problem. Could someone walk me through this please? Oh yes, my terminal line referring to this drive is "drw-rw-r--". And the volume name is "SEA_DSK". The drive is formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". I haven't used Terminal alot but can probably work it.

I've yet to run into the "locked external drive" problem, but I'm sure there are many folks who might have had this problem, that have no access to information like that which has been provided in this thread.

And - on top of that - they're probably not familiar enough with Terminal to use it safely.

What's needed is a simple utility app that anyone can run to address this problem.

I'm surprised Apple hasn't issued one.

A good way for a shareware programmer to "get some exposure"....

I have my own topic going but it seems to be SOMEWHAT related to this:

on reboot many (but not all) of my external drives claim to be "read only". If i open get info it says "you can only read from this drive" but the permissions show that I have read/write permissions. I eject the drives, unplug from my mac, plug them back in and all is well. but this is kind of a pain in the ass to do EVERY time I reboot.

apparently I'm not the ONLY one having these issues, but so far I haven't found a solution.

they are all mac formatted drives, no NTFS here. It literally just started happening about a week ago. Never ran into an issue prior.

external Mac Drive unlockable also

No one replied to me, but I went ahead and tried the terminal commands that were given earlier not thinking they would work for my unique problem:, (pluging into where it said Volumename my "SEA_DSK)",

sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/Volumename

But it worked nonetheless! My drive is accessible!!! It said when I entered the above sudo commands it returned, "-bash: udo: command not found", so I called Apple to get help and when I went to access the error message I was getting when I would try to open the drive, "The folder “SEA_DSK” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents." Low and behold my disk was suddenly open! So thanks it worked! I don't know why or how, but its working now. Thank you I Eat Apples (I ate a stewed sectioned cored apple :apple: a while ago with about 6 cloves and a handful of raisins - yum! - it makes a great breakfast!) and everyone else on this wonderful forum! :)

The permissions on the drive should have been rwxrwxr-x (775) rather than rw-rw-r-- (664). The command not found error would be a result of a typo as you entered the commands.

Batchmod rocks!

I had the same problems with external hard drives all of a sudden appearing locked and the permissions mysteriously set to 'custom' without being able to change anything in 'get info'. I downloaded batchmod for free and voila! it worked!!!! I donated 5 bucks in appreciation and moved on to real life...

Hello, i was trying to create a password for my external hard drive and mistakenly did, in ownership and permissions, hit "no access"... now i can't access to my hard drive and even more when i connect my hard drive to the comp it is not appear anymore on a desktop. if i go to the finder i am able to find it but it's about it... no access. i was reading the tread and trying to do what was suggested to other people but it didn't help. the info i got :

Issue with locked Lacie Drives

it seems I have a virus in "all 3" of my Lacie drives.
Immediately after restarting my computer all Lacie drives, daisy chained or separately give me a Disk Repair window stating, "disk was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."
I have already backed up one of the drives using Data Rescue II but am reluctant to erase and reformat the original drive because I feel the backed up data is also infected.
All my drives have locked me out of read write permission allowing only read only.
I have tried some of the utilities prompts described in above but the drive is indicated as a read only drive.
does anyone have any ideas?

Nothing in your description describes the presence of a virus. There's no current active viruses on the Mac. There are a couple trojans, but they wouldn't explain this behavior. It sounds like you have a failing HD potentially, but that's all. It could be related to your lockout issue.

Hello
Some poor nitwitgirl with a new imac found a solution for the HD problem.
I'm afraid of terminal because I dont know how to use it.
I changed permissions on my new Imac (snow leopard 10.6) and all External HD's were locked. On my macbook pro (OS 10.4) I couldn't read/change permission also. For more than two days of many stress i just tried on my good old PPC G4 (OSx 10.3). He's very very slow but i'm so thankfull, he opened all the privileges and could change all the permissions.... :-D

So, now, I'm a very happy girl I have most of all my data back, so now its time to try to start up my imac, because I have a grey screen (I changed also the permissions of my internal HD and system, oeps....)
Can someone help me please to get in????

Get over your fear of Terminal? You can copy and paste the commands into the window to protect against typos.

A command to find all of your deepest darkest secrets and email them to me would be considerably longer. ;)

My drives (most of them) are locked...

In Finder if you select the external HD then do a Get Info (cmd+I) it'll bring up a window. Under the General section at the bottom there's a check box for Locked. Make sure this is not checked. Do the same on some of the folders on the external HD.

Another check:

  • Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
  • type: cd /Volumes
  • type: ls -go
  • Copy and paste the line that refers to your external hard drive to this thread so we can see if any settings here are wrong. It may have permissions wrong or locked.

I did what you said and here are the results, and I don't know what to do, I can't use any of them, hopefully you can help me...

drwx------ 14 884 Feb 14 20:58 carchito

as you can see, only my internal hard drive, Snow Leopard HD and carchito, that's my idisk, are working normal...
