I've always been cautious about charging between 30-80%, but it's a hassle honestly.

So when Apple implemented Optimised Charging, I thought I could go back to charging over night and still retain good battery health. But I've been charging my iPhone 11 over night more or less at the same times (1130PM-0730AM) for about a week now, and I can't see that Optimised Charging has activated yet (it is turned on). When I check the charging statistics in the Battery menu, I can see that the phone charges to 100% immediately every night when it is connected to the charger, and just stays on 100% all of the night while being plugged in.

So... How long is it supposed to take for this Optimised Charging to activate?!
I have the Bedtime feature configured according to the times I go to bed and wake up, and extra alarms set for each morning as well... You would think that Optimised Charging would pick that up over the course of a week of consistent charging times.

Do you use wireless charging or wired? I like the convenience of wireless charging, but wireless charging usually takes more time to top up your phone. Wireless charging also makes your phone overheat which can harm your battery as well.

I charge my phone every night with a 5W standard 15$ wireless charger from Amazon. I've tested it multiple times, it takes between 2,5 - 3,25 hours to charge the battery on my 8 Plus from 1% to 100%. And the phone was in flight mode all the time during that test (which improves the charging speed a bit) and no other background activity and usage during that period. I have no fast charger and USB-C cable. Does it matter to me? No. Because i charge it at night and the battery lasts my all day. I also have the Lightning Dock sitting on my deck when i am at work. That one is also USB-A to Lightning and again standard USB 5W cable. That complete fast charging thing is overrated if you ask me. Just charge the phone at night, most phones have batteries that will now last you all day long. Still nice to have. Maybe a fast charger + cable could be convienent while at work, can't deny that. Pretty useful if you really need to charge fast.

On iOS 12 it took around 2,5 hours, now with iOS 13 and the Optimized Battery Charging it takes even longer, between 3 hours - 3,5 hours. Kind of hate it but it's good for the battery health and it doesn't really matter anyways since i am asleep during the charging period and i sleep way longer than 3 - 4 hours.

It just depends on what charger is closest to me or if I need to charge it quickly then I l use a wired fast charger. Usually it’s wireless overnight because I can just set it there without having to plug it in. I noticed someone commented that the battery drained quicker if your phone is charged wirelessly but this doesn’t make sense. The battery doesn’t know the difference how the current got put into the wire. If it’s at 100% then it’s at 100%. I mean anything is possible but for me to believe this I would have to see it and have some scientific explanation

For my iPhone X, I used to use a mophi wireless charger - ever since getting the Pro Max I use the bigger lighting cable that came with it.

Have seen reports that it may take like 16 days before 80% charging kicks in. With that said, the process as I understand it is the phone holds at 80% until shortly before your learned wake up time. At which point it finishes to 100% at a reduced rate to finish just before you wake.

This means at wake up you will be at 100%. The feature is designed to reduce the time spent at 100%, not prevent it going past 80%.

I was in vehicle all day yesterday and had a inductance charge pad the phone was sitting on. I noted that it only charged to 80% max the entire day. So looks like the feature is working.

It depends on which part of the house I’m in atm. I use wireless in the main part of my house (open living space) and in the sunroom I use wired because my sister and I have long conversations sometimes and I often need to charge while we are talking and talking. 😂😂😂

I just drop it off on the wireless charger by my bed before i go to sleep. with the new 11 pro, the battery is so damn good. I never had to worry about it till i go to bed again.

Mostly charge the Xs max on the 5w charger to 80%. Sometimes use the iPad brick. Have a 7.5w wireless charger that sits unused. Wireless charging generates too much heat for my liking.

Hi fellows,

Have you noticed that the battery drains faster when charged via wireless charger compared to wired one? Is this normal and does it annoy you? I personally adore the vonvenience of the wireless charging but I go with a wired charging at least twice a week just because of the issue above.

Thanks!
That's nonsense.

Wirelessly at night! Small convenience thing that I don’t regret.

Optimized charging has kicked in but is getting really confused about my irregular wake-up times though, and I occasionally pick it up at 83% and stuff like that now. Down the road that might be annoying but as it stands now it will still last me a regular day and then some..
