Thought it would be interesting to gauge how people feel about Big Sur's new look?

Initial thought: If people are saying there will never be a merging of iOS and Mac OS then they have not seen Big Sur.

In fact, my M1 is arriving Tuesday and it supports iOS apps.

98% looks great and very easy to use and understand. Safari (active) tabs next toolbar seems like they could have a bit more contrast. But that is a minor gripe and I'll probably get used to it.

I like the transparent menu bar way more than I thought I would. Definitely makes it feel more modern.

I think it looks pretty but it has terrible legibility compared to Yosemite-Catalina and that the square apps look great but make the process of visual differentiation more difficult on the lower PPI screens used on most desktop displays. I'm hopeful they will change the UI with later versions or at least make major changes to the fonts, font colors, shade colors, and contrast.

There's no right or wrong answer. It's not about there being a "winner", it's about gauging how people are feeling about it. There's always going to be some who love something and some who hate it. Seeing that proportion can be useful for people (like me) who are in two minds about upgrading right now.

I like the new UI for the most part. Looks clean, minus the various UI bugs that still exist in the release.

One gripe I have is with the Catalyst apps (Podcasts, Stocks, etc). They can’t be resized smaller than they should be. You’d think they can be made smaller given that they are iPhone apps. They end up being a window that takes up way too much screen estate.

Love the new sounds and that new Big Sur wall paper, not the candy colors for 5-years old, but that California coastline. Looks incredible, specially when it turns late afternoon and evening.

It's got a few inconsistencies, but on the whole I really like the new look, apart from the default wallpaper that shows up after installation (which is horrendous).

Once I changed that to something better the whole UI looked much better

I do feel it still needs a bit of polishing in areas such as system preferences where the icons don't look consistent but for me it's a definite improvement over Catalina

It's okay, if a little soft/faint in places. I prefer sharper, easier to discern graphical elements, but it's not something I worry a whole lot about. I just open up an app and get to work.

Doesn't really matter if we like it or not, things will always change and just need to accept and move on.

There are no options if you are planning on purchasing a new M1 MacBook in the future.

Overall, a lot has changed and I think it will take sometime to grow on people. Personally, I like a lot of the new feature with the stuff around AirPods auto-switching, iMessages, etc...

I like it. Definitely a fan of the control changes on the top bar, the sounds the transparent looks also play a big factor in my decision.

It is a mixed bag for me, but I can live with it.

What annoys me, however, is the lack of button shapes in the toolbar. It is made worse by the slight delay when you hover with your pointer over it. Unlike iOS, macOS does not distinguish text-only or symbol-only buttons with colour. I would that Apple at least adds an option to show button shapes (like on iOS) without having to enable the “increase contrast” option.

One thing that is super minor but is driving me crazy is the open new tab button in Safari which they moved to the top bar instead of inline within the tab bar 😆

My biggest complaint is that the UI is less dense. I use every inch of my display and it "feels" smaller due to the wider titlebars, spread out UI elements and so on.

I don't know why they had to do this; it was great before. And yes I can go into display settings and change it to "more space" but that reduces performance.

For this reason I'm not upgrading my main desktop yet.

I like the new sidebar look. Finally has some color again, at least.

I like the new small folder icons. They pop more than the previous ones.

Control Center is a nice idea, but its interface was clearly not designed for a cursor, and nothing else in the OS looks like it.

I despise the new title/tool bar. There's no clear separation between elements since the buttons have no backgrounds or borders anymore. The way the window title is in the same row as the buttons means its location is inconsistent across applications, as opposed to always being top and center as it was before. Now it's sometimes immediately to the right of the traffic light buttons (Activity Monitor), sometimes immediately to the right of the sidebar (Mail), sometimes immediately to the right of... whatever variable amount of buttons happen to be to the left of it (Finder, System Preferences), and sometimes centered (Terminal). Both of these issues makes the whole OS seem very messy.

Why does it reduce performance?

Why does it reduce performance?
Because it runs in higher resolution. That's why i'm still thinking if i should update to Big Sur. I don't like how bigger they made everything, i mean i'm fine with it but it takes more space on smaller screens and i'm not changing the display settings to "more space" because i can see more lags and stutters and i can feel the reduced performance on my Macbook Pro 13 from 2016. So i'll probably update to Big Sur by buying a new MacBook with more powerful CPU&GPU that runs fine with the settings changed to "more space".
