Be interesting to know how many active users it still had. Apple "sherlocking" it and then eventually dumping it is straight out of the Microsoft "acquire and retire" playbook.

Once Apple announced notification center widgets in OS X Yosemite, I knew Dashboard was on its way out, especially since it didn't change design. It became more apparent with OS X El Capitan, when Apple didn't bother to update the Tile Game widget with the El Capitan wallpaper.

I'm honestly impressed it took this long for Apple to remove it. Although I knew it was long coming, it's difficult to say goodbye to the Dashboard: one of my favorite gems from the Tiger days.

Huge loss for me. I have a million stickies with notes etc I reference. What will happen to them? I am not going to upgrade till forced.

Do yourself a favour and migrate them into Notes, then you can have them synced to your iPad / iPhone / other Macs, etc.

Then don't upgrade.
Easier said than done. Keeping the OS updated is important for several other reasons, like security, software support, and of course new features.

Ideally, a Dashboard alternative could be developed. That's part of why I made this poll -- to see if that would be in demand to people other than me. It seems like it is. So, assuming that I ever succeed in running Catalina on my unsupported MacBook, I fully intend to work on such a thing.

I don't plan on upgrading. I love Dashboard.

Any Dashboard notes you have are actually imported into the Stickies app when you upgrade to Catalina!
Good to know. Thanks.

I use dashboard several times daily. Stocks, weather, and occasionally stickies to jog my memory on obscure keyboard shortcuts. The four finger swipe across made it effortless. I’ll miss it.

Anyway, I’ve been practicing my two finger swipe in from the right hand edge of the trackpad. I’m good.

I use it all the time. If they kill it I will seriously consider not upgrading my OS.

Unnecessary removal of feature, for which there was no good reason to remove, other than “it’s too old”. The thing is, there is no better thing to replace it. You remove the feature when you have something better to take its place. For Dashboard, there is nothing. Notification Center widgets are lame compared to Dashboard functionality.

The way tech headlines are written is also laughable. “Apple FINALLY kills Dashborard”. “Finally”!

Like it’s something that was all giving us trouble, and we couldn’t wait for it to get removed.
Very well said.

I am in your boat. I am not upgrading past Mojave.

Believe me, stubbornness and reluctance to change doesn’t work in a long run. I’ve tried it, trust me. I was on 10.9.5 for long time, before I noticed that I am starting to get lonely there, mainly due to lack of software support.

IMHO, it’s better to accept the things they are. Sooner, the better.

Not always. I actually need 32 bit for excel 2011. I also have 2016 installed and the glitches (e.g misclicking cells) are still not fixed in 2019. Waiting on Mojave will give those mentally slow developers extra time to get their crap together.

This happens on all my systems, even in a clean install situation. And with friends who use excel so it's definitely not limited to my system

I used Dashboard heavily back in college on my PowerBook, although I used it less and less as the years went on, replacing much of its functionality with either menubar adding and then Notification Center widgets. I'll be mildly sad to see it go, I suppose. I haven't used it regularly in years though. When I'm using my old PowerBook (I mostly use it for writing these days) I still totally make use of it there, but it's not like that's going away :)

I'm glad again to see @ASentientBot & @jackluke are bringing back my beloved dashboard on Catalina!
Keep fighting Best luck!
Looks like @jackluke's solution is pretty much perfect so I actually haven't been spending much time on porting over the Mojave version. After all, packaging a widget as an app seems like a nice future-proof solution.

I did manage to implement a full-screen notepad overlay that can be hidden and shown by tapping the Dashboard key though! Which I'm pretty happy about because (1) I'd never used Swift before in my life and (2) that was all I used Dashboard for anyways -- running a simple custom widget for keeping notes/to-do items in. And it's a good use of that otherwise obsolete Dashboard key on my 2010 MacBook now that I use Catalina pretty much full time.

Take your time @ASentientBot :) to delve into this bringback project by your usually minimal & clean hack with @jackluke & @pkouame
I'm always keen to read and follow your smart findings y'all three!
Simply awesome! :)

dashboard=fun? try the calculator in the notification center, the notes app, forecast bar... etc. there are apps, websites, for everything. and the new apps that replace itunes should be just the same, overall; apps to play music, watch video...
Also having calculator functions built right in Spotlight comes in really handy
