I didn't fight. I had a 256GB 10.5 iPad Pro LTE. I upgraded to the 256GB iPad Pro 11" (2020). Still haven't found a buyer for the old one, but so far I'm pleased with my decision.

I went from the 10.5 Pro to the 2018 12.9 Pro and really like the change to the smaller bezels.

The first question is, "why do you feel you need to have the newest, latest, and greatest?" I doubt the answer is because you need those new features... and it is more likely a feeling of "missing out". But answer that question, and you'll go a long way toward contentment.

The best antidote to that is to recognize Apple's marketing (both overt and subliminal) for what it is. What I mean by that is to take a cold hard look at the device you have and what Apple is offering in the latest gen.

Apple (and their fanbase by extension) does a masterful job of hyping up gimmicks into "must-have" options. Pro-Motion is a good example. Before Pro-Motion was released, nobody was complaining about the poor refresh rate of the screen. But once it came out, then magically the iPads without PM became slow stuttery messes.

Nobody complained about the latency of the Apple Pencil 1. But once the Pencil 2 was released, the Pencil 1 was "unusable".

Those are just 2 examples... there is a long list of many more. Apple also fosters and preys on customer's "fear". Fear of missing out on the latest buzz, fear of running out of storage space, and fear of costly repairs. This is why their profit margins are upgrades above the base models are so high. People will spend more for more storage. By inflating their out-of-warranty repair prices, they buoy the incentive to pay for AppleCare+.

I know that there will be a flurry of people replying how the advancements in the iPad are "must-have" and give their reasons for that belief. That's fine. I have no desire to convince them to think otherwise. But for people like you who want to do something different, this is a big step toward that.
Can you be my life coach? I need one.

Do you regret those decisions now?
Went with a cousin I hadn't seen in 4 years so nope, not at all. We live in different countries so opportunities like that are extremely rare (thus far, her first and only trip to US). It's actually been another 4 years since I last saw her (I went home for my grandma's funeral). Meanwhile, there's always gonna be new tech around the corner.

Much easier to resist now than it was maybe 5 years ago. Year on year upgrades have never been more incremental.

I can easily go 3 years between phones now without any desire to upgrade.

My 1TB iPad Pro is as good now as it ever was, and will actually get better when the Magic Keyboard is released.

Macs? My maxed out 2012 Mac Mini (the last quad core model before they got worse for a few years) and 2013 MacBook Pro are still champs. Admittedly, I don’t use them that much, other than the Mini as a server.

Biggest tech upgrade of past year or two was a new gpu for my gaming PC. My 2011 built PC STILL runs game at 100fps+ @1440p, although I’ve upgraded a few parts multiple times in the last decade. CPU is showing it’s age, maybe an entirely new build with cherry picked parts from my old one (extremely fast SSD and 2080 Ti GPU) in 2021.

Great! So when the stay-at-home order lifts, what device you gonna buy? ;) 😆
😂😂😂
I’m hoping nothing except maybe AirPods 2. I love my AirPods with the cable, but they break down after 4-6+ months. Are the AirPods built better to perhaps last longer?
*sorry, off topic there. 😬

The RAM and getting a new device to last 2-more years via AppleCare+ is partially why.
I wish I could insure my iPad Pro for 5-years with Apple.

Are you outside the US? That's an option in the US with $5.99 monthly AC+.

For me I have a very difficult time fighting off the urge to buy the newest tech. I’m just curious how anyone here is able to stick with older iPads, Macs, and iPhones. How dourge without giving in and buying the newest or latest or greatest?

Kallum.
Can you afford it and does it give you a good feeling? Can it be viewed as a hobby to have the latest and greatest? Contrast the need of yours to traditional fashion where people uses thousands of USD per year on clothes, shoes and handbags despite having the house full of last years collection that is suddenly unusable. Compare it to hobbies such as sailing where you easily use 5-10.000 USD per year.

I upgrade when the devices are unusable. The same goes for clothes and shoes. I just do not like to buy things and when I buy, I buy high end and expensive so it last. Speaking of which, where is the microLED iPad preferably 15-17 inch , 8-16 Gb RAM and 2-4Tb SSD and an A17X? Now you know when I approximately want to upgrade again :)

Simple.
Look at price, look at wallet/bank account, done.
:D

Agree. I used to upgrade every second upgrade. Now I update only when the iPad is getting slow.

iPads just keep working and most models last a long time for the vast majority of users. When it just does its thing it makes avoiding the upgrade so much easier, IMO.

Yup, the fact that basic functionality available in iPadOS is essentially the same for iPads a few generations back is what makes it easy to keep the older devices longer. I could certainly unlock my iPad Pro differently with FaceID, connect external devices differently with USB-C or take photos of different quality with a newer generation but it isn’t impossible to do what I need to now with my 2017 version of iPad Pro so I’m keeping it for one more cycle.

Very good point. I hate shopping too. I think had I not gotten the 3rd gen in 2019, I probably would have gotten this one. Although, it appears this 4th gen has some worse issues I’ve seen and heard.
I’d love an iPad that’s 13.3”, 16GB RAM, A15-17X, MiniLED or MicroLED, 800+ nits brightness for better HDR, full 4K movie playback, Atmos Sound, and no stupid oven camera on back.
A few more Desktop OS-abilities with iPadOS 3.
😂✌️

That would be the end all beast of an iPad to destroy everything except Mac Pros, iMac Pros, and MacBook Pros spec’d out like crud Lol

I’m going to look into that for sure.

I don’t, I cave every time. That said he I still had my 2018 iPad Pro I wouldn’t have upgraded to the 2020 but still love it
