Smartphones are tools and are inevitably replaced in 2-4 years. There’s no reason to obsess over its condition. That’s for investment items that increase in value.

Might be a silly question, but worth asking.

Why do you all think iPhones can't increase their value in the very future? We're talking about 30-50 years from now, where I'm sure phones will no longer exist, will be replaced by something else. Why wouldn't an iPhone from 2018 for example, maybe brand new, have a very high value, considering nobody else is offering it because they got rid of theirs?

Just like people are selling and buying the original iPhone for thousands of dollars, regardless 99% of the cases, the iPhone was used before and just restored to brand new condition.

This also applies to newer Apple products, like first gen AirPods or Apple Watch.

I am like that. But its only for Apple products. I couldn't care less about any other devices from other brands. I am most obsessive with my iphone, ipad, and macbook but lesser extent with my apple tv and imac. I just don't know why. But it is the way it is. I am also very afraid of bending my apple products especially iphone and ipad which is one of the reason why I am holding off on buying the new ipad. I cannot enjoy my devices if they are imperfect. I remember getting my iphone x exchanged because i thought i had bend it taking off my case (probably wasn't bent but didn't want to take any chances).

It has nothing to do with resale value either. I just need it to look perfect in order for me to enjoy.

Not to sound rude and I’m not be sarcastic but I’ve through similar so I’ll yell you what helped me.

I got a life. Yes. A life. Meaning I got some friends. A social life. Which led to a dating life. A passion for my responsibilities. And so one.

Second thing. I came to realize it’s only a matter of time before I replaced all my devices. So I keep a phone pristine. Worry about it. Then sell it to the next guy who gets to enjoy it off my hard work keeping it pristine. Off my worry. I want to be the guy who enjoys it fully.

I used to be like that. So glad I’m not anymore. It was such a burden removed from my shoulders. It’s a tech device that I’m most likely going to replace in 1-2 years. Enjoy it and move on.

The answer is pretty simple. Anything made by the millions and millions will never be valuable in the future. Something is valuable only if it is somewhat rare and hard to find.

This is me as well, but I'm learning how to cope. I try the head on approach at times, and accept the fact that their are plenty of imperfections on the Stainless Steel, but I don't let those bother me, thus, I plan not to let the screen imperfections bother me as well.

Plus my phone is unlocked (even though it shouldn't be), and I also managed to get esim from T-Mobile active. So if I were to get a replacement for the the cosmetic damage on my phone, I'd be giving all that up.

Too, the longer I keep it, the more I get attached to this specific device. I don't think I've ever kept the iPhone that I bought out of the box, I always end up getting warranty replacements. It would be SUPER DOPE, if I could do this for the first time!!!!!!!!!!

I felt the same and became very attached to my X. I end up using an upgrade to get the XS Max and I completely regret it and wish I had kept my X.

I keep my phone ... my XR is my first iPhone ... in the most rugged case I can find (currently a Pelican Shield Kevlar case) because I'm an absolute klutz and even though I bought Uh-Oh insurance, I don't want to go through the trouble of having to replace the phone if I mess it up.

I use glass screen protectors because I like the feel of a glass screen protector and because the one thing I am anal about with my phones ... I don't mind a few scuffs on the corners, bezels or back ... is the screen.

It's basically because it's been ingrained in me, literally since childhood, to take care of my stuff. I try not to get to the point of OCD, but I do take care of my stuff, all my stuff, electronic and otherwise.

And it's particularly applicable when it comes to something that I spent $1,029 on (phone, Apple Care +, tax) upfront, given that I use an MVNO and don't have a contract with a carrier that allows me to pay the thing off over time, do trade-ins and upgrades, etc.

It's basically just I take care of my stuff, not any sense of attachment, etc.

First off what is the obsession of keeping it pristine?
Second it’s mobile, gets stuffed in pockets, bags and back packs with all your other crap.
Not to mention dropped, placed on a desk/table, in consoles of vehicles, placed of various surfaces and so on.
It’s bound to show wear and tear.
A white pair of shoes only stays white for a finite time.
I did the IUP and have a case on my max.
It’s liberating to enjoy the phone and not worry about it every second.
The phone is still taken care of but the compulsiveness is gone

It depends on the type of person you grew up as.

For example; I'm a gamer and if you see my retro collection of consoles (N64, PS1, Dreamcast, etc) they are pristine. I always cleaned them/took care of them as a kid and I'm glad I did because they're truly a joy to use again and they feel brand new.

Granted, mobile phones are used everyday and are tools and become obsolete but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take care of it. I went caseless with an iPhone 6 Plus and I regretted it. It looked very dinged up, scuffed and gouged after a few years. The screen had TONS of micro scratches on it.

These days I go with a glass screen protector and a slimline case that doesn't make the iPhone look ugly. I made peace with not liking/owning dinged up pieces of tech.

Those were the days with consoles like Dreamcast, Nintendo 64 and I even had a Game-cube at one point, but you are correct, when you take care of your property, it lasts longer and for someone else that may be interested in buying it, they see value in something like that, and it shows what type of person you are that you maintained it. I’m the same way with all my tech products as well, and it does pay off in the long run, either way if you plan on keeping it or selling it to someone else.

You get over it.

I babied my iPhone XR for two weeks before it got a scratch from something in my pocket. I threw it in a silicone case and called it a day. It bothered me for awhile but now I’m just like “meh”. Tbh the resale value is what bothered me the most

I've owned my iPhone 8 for a little over a year now, basically got it around launch. I was crazy obsessed about keeping it immaculate. I would put a full dbrand skin on the phone and then use a case. I wasn't always like this. Recently after taking the skin off I saw small paint chips at the bottom. And its been bugging me since.

Its supposed to be a tool and nothing more but I dont really know why I am bothering about it so much. Has anyone dealt with something similar and gotten over it?

Not altogether unfamiliar. I also have OCD on brand new "toys". A new car? Sure. I obsessed about my car for the first few weeks, it was one of the nicest (new) cars in the parking lot at work. Every time I approached my car, I inspected it for any dings, scratches, etc. I also prayed that no one was evil enough to KEY my brand new car (simply out of jealousy).

Same could be said about my iPhone XS. Having spent over $1100 on a phone (more than that actually, since I paid for AppleCare+), I'd want to keep it pristine and in "mint condition" as much as possible. But in the end, they are only tools and gadgets.

Eventually, we will all get over that OCD feeling. And if not… maybe a good psychiatrist? :p

I found that it helps to buy second hand. For me, I worry a bit about resale value; I like to keep it as high as possible which makes my phone cheaper to own. You're losing way less money when buying second hand, so a scratch doesn't matter that much anymore.

Furthermore, after owning two scratched-up second hand Jet Black iPhones, it's way nicer to use a phone like that without a case and without the worries.
