There's a variety of ways, the easiest of which all involve simply having two browser windows open. With Safari open, just hit ⌘N (or: File -> New Window). Now you have two windows open. ⌘N as often as you like to keep opening more windows. ⌘T to open new tabs within a window.

Btw, this isn't M1 specific ... this is the way it's been done probably since OS X was originally released in March 2001, possibly even earlier.

It's also how Windows and (likely most if not all distributions of) Linux does it, so not sure why OP thought the Mac was limited to working like an iPad and not like other windows-on-the-desktop operating systems. Perhaps Apple needs to improve their advertising & outreach.

I don’t think you’re running the latest version of Big Sur. That is no longer possible.

It is still possible on 11.2.3. I have heard talk that it hasn't been possible on 11.3 beta.

ty everyone ps is there a way to use the finger print reader to log in to MacBook Air after reboot

Not all services are running at login screen so no fingerprint, no clickless touchpad, etc. Only available after logging in. Annoying as heck coming from Windows which has everything running at login.

dang I live alone and I rather leave my laptop open. I hate losing in since I can't recall my password. plus it don't even show what I'm typing. ill get used to it I hope

I’m pretty sure I am running the latest version I did the update like maybe a week ago 🤷🏻‍♂️

Try just closing the lid for it to go to sleep instead of shutting down the laptop. Then you'll be able to log in with your fingerprint I think. If you insist on keeping the lid open, you can either change the default time that it has to sit before it goes to sleep (in system preferences -> battery -> and in the battery / power adapter tabs on the left you can choose how long before the display turns off), or select sleep from the apple menu instead of shut down.

The only time I ever fully shut down are for updates or if something is clearly going wrong with the OS.
