The reviews say that the only way is to put them in the case????

Thats right. You can't switch them off. They will just drain...unless you put them in the case and then the case power manages and slows down but doesn't stops the power drain. So if you go out for the day and dont use them all the time, you may need to take the case with you

The magnet in the case turns them off. Thus, I wonder if 'any' magnet would turn them off...
It doesn't turn them off. The power drain is merely reduced. There is no on/off function.

AirPods Max case

Apple says that the AirPods Max Smart Case is designed to put the headphones into an “ultra-low power state that helps to preserve battery charge when not in use.” This functionality sounds useful and seemingly works properly, but the design of Smart Case is a different story.

2 ways..put them in the case and that will put the headphones in sleep mode, or let them be and after 5 minutes will auto go into sleep mode
Is the 5 min auto sleep confirmed? Thats good to know thanks

Yes very true. There is no way to switch the AirPods/Pro's off. There is battery management offered via IoS for optimised charging. We might see that for the Max's one day
Good point, but of course the key difference being the Airpod Pro's get charged while in that state of being, while the Max will just slowly drain haha

If the ultra low power mode is any thing like the AirPod Pros, I doubt a lot of people will be mad or rightfully disappointed.

There's surely has to be some button holding shut off? Maybe holding both buttons for a few seconds.

I kinda think the issue is the that they work the same but that they aren't the same type of product and that affects the way you use them, naturally. In the case of the airpods they are small and individual. It makes sense that when you aren't using them, you would put them in the case to not lose them.

In the case of this product they are headphones. I wouldn't want to put them in the case everytime I take them off.

Valid point. At the same time, for $550 (plus tax, tag, and title) it may behoove a lot of people to start putting headphones in the case or at least get a headphone stand.

Does this mean they are always on even if I don’t intend using them for a week or more. I guess I would use them lightly as I tend to switch off my headphones for weeks at a time. I’d be worried these being always connected might degrade battery longevity. Lack of power switch seems wasteful

Just another decision that Apple thinks they're making for the customer, but doesn't make sense on such a big unit that doesn't have a recharge capability like the APP case

Bose NC-700 had the auto power off issue and they issued a software update to enable them to turn off after x minutes - hours with no activity. But of course there is a power off button.

If these could be turned off, how would you find them in “Find my” via BLE?

The case is a quick way to put them in BLE mode reliably for days.

Sitting on a desk, they will go in BLE mode automatically, we just need to be sure after how long (5 mins or “about 2 hours” like a youtuber briefed by apple said).

If they were free to be twisted in a bag without the case magnet, they could accidentally be awakened constantly.

But for daily usage, one reviewer reported they would drain 3-4% in 8hrs sitting on a bedside table without the case. If that’s true, I feel the case is really needed only for long term storage and travel.

Ok, tested in the store, if you press and hold the digital crown for 10 seconds...they go into sleep mode...you also have an iOS notification
If you press and hold for 2-3 sec SIRI is deployed but if you continue to hold the button for another 7 seconds it goes to sleep mode
Maybe i will try again tomorrow and try to snap a pic
