If i just use iTunes to update the jailbroken iPhone will it still work afterwards? it just won't be jailbroken or will it not work at all??

Your phone will no longer be jailbroken. If you rely on your jailbreak for activation or an unlock for carrier compatibility, you may have problems. Otherwise, it will work just like a new phone.

This thread really needs to die.

You shouldn't update firmware on a jailbroken phone as you can run into losing space. You should always restore with preferably a custom firmware.

Ok, with 4.3 out, is there any way for those of us on 4.2.1 (jailbroken) to update to 4.3.1 with pwnagetool without losing all of our installous and cydia apps?

Nope....use a backup application to make the restoring your Cydia apps a painless as possible....such as PCKBackup.

the mention of installous is frown upon in here - don't expect much help!

As with anything, the tool itself is not necessarily evil, it's how you use it. I frequently use Installous to try out an app, then if I like it I will buy it from the App store and support the developer. If it's junk, I delete it. It can be a valuable resource in making an app purchasing decision. Now if you are just using it to blatantly pirate things, that's a different story. Apple really needs to add the ability to try out apps, which would make this less necessary.

Yep. Trying stuff out first is the way to go. When I'm looking to buy a new car, I just go out and steal one and drive it around for a week or so. If I like it, I return it and buy one from the dealer (gotta support the manufacturers). If I don't like it, I just leave it at the side of the road and move on.

PkgBackup?

you must mean PkgBackup by Jibril Gueye. it's currently at version 4.3.7 and seems popular, but $7.99 seems a bit stiff for the equivalent of the free AptBackup with Dropbox support....

Even the most backwards, unfriendly, no customer service what so ever car dealership will let you test drive any car before you buy it.

In fact if the dealership does not allow you to test drive it first, by law you get three days to return it no questions asked. This is why all car dealerships will not sell you a car before you test drive it.

No need to "borrow" one without permission.

Seriously? If you test drive a car, the salesman is with you, they have your ID, and you return the car in a set (very short) time. Test driving an app fits none of those parameters. It is an open-ended "borrow," there is no ID check, and you and you alone are responsible for deleting it (if ever).

Nice try, though. :)

Jailbreaking phone

Hi I know you're post about jailbreaking phones was from a long time ago but I have a few questions if you don't mind me asking.
what type of iphone do you have? because I have a 3gs and it's not like those are brand new so I don't think I would be risking that much if I got it jailbroken. What do you think? How long have you had a jailbroken phone?
thank you!!

Yes you wouldn't be risking that much. Consider your phone as a toy. Sometimes, you have to be really careful. Im just about to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS 16GB and so far I haven't risked losing anything on my phone. Use evasi0n, the updated one. Evasi0n is a 1 step program. All you gotta do is press Jailbreak and let it jailbreak your iPhone, iPod, iPad, or any other Apple supporting model. Evasi0n works on any generation model (not 1st gen). Try it out.
