I am in the same situation.

I have a MBP 1.83GHz. This is a good machine but it is too heavy for me. I am starting to get into digital photography and a big heavy DSLR and a MBP is going to cripple me sooner or later. So when (sorry if) the UK get the "Back to school" promotion then I will jump for a 1.8GHz 80GB Air (I will go with the 1.8GHz as I can not upgrade the processor but I can upgrade the HD in time).

Another consideration is that 10.6 will be more efficient and as far as I can tell will see better improvements in the Core 2 Duo (MBA) over the Core Duo (MBP).

I have the same machine as the OP and am looking at a MBA as well. I was worried about the performance of the hard disk since it is only 4200 rpm. I've been tempted to go the EEE route (or similar netbook) to take to work each day. I just can't give up OS X. I'll probably wait until AppleCare runs out on my current machine which is next April.

I'd also like to see what Apple puts out in the meantime.

If I can use the air as a primary machine with virtual machines running in the background, im pretty sure you'll be able to run your stuff without any problems.
