most of you don't have to worry about it because portal 2 uses still the same old Source engine which dated back 2004. the engine is pretty much older. it only requires little graphic power. just look at system requirement. you only need 128MB graphic card including Intel HD graphic. so if you have any graphic card (shared or dedicated) more than 256MB, you can set it up everything high. I set max everything up. by the way, it's kind of pity that Valve still depends on old engine not to develop or upgrade anything. the game is fun, has some interesting story on. but I am not impressive by graphic at all.
Well, I think Portal 2 looks awesome and it's a great engine. I even think that HL2 looks decent enough today. It's similar to the way Blizzard handles it - the graphics are not technically the best but look fitting for the specific game. And if it runs fine on a mediocre graphics card, that is even better. It's not all about numbers...a bit like with Mac specs ;)

^ well put.

Also the source engine has been updated several times throughout the years. HL2 vs Ep2 there's a big difference on maximum settings. Left 4 Dead 2 also requires more power. TF2 uses an updated "Orange BOx" source engine and I'm sure Portal 2 uses an updated engine. It does look pretty IMO.

So basically if the 9400m can run it, anything better than the 9400m SHOULD be able to run Portal 2, given you're fine with lower settings and resolution. This confirms my thoughts that the 320m will be totally FINE when running this game, as well as the HD 3000. I am not too familiar with the x1600 so I cannot comment on that. I doubt the older GMA950 and x3100 will work though lol Guessing the 9400m is the end of the line here folks when it comes to Source gaming.

Well, the SteamPowered page says that Radeon X800 or better is usable on Windows, 2400 or higher on Mac; GeForce 7600 on Windows, 8600M on Mac; or Intel HD3000 or higher (they say Intel HD 2000 on Windows, but there never was an Intel HD 2000.)

I wish they had a free trial, I'd be happy to try it out on my X1600, but I want to wait until it gets cheaper to buy it.

unlike Windows... Macs ratings aren't based off what card is capable of doing what... but by actual GPUs that have been in Macs. Sometimes it looks like higher requirements, but its not true, simply because they are basing it off what actually exists, not listing some card that could run it even if no Mac actually has that card in it.

And yes, there is such a thing as an Intel HD 2000, but since no Mac uses that, theres no reason for them to list that for Macs.

Thought I'd help out here,

Mac Mini, C2D 2.53 GHz, 4GB DDR3, 9400M, 5400 RPM drive.

Portal 2 Settings: 1280x800, AA off, Filtering 4X, VSYNC off, Shaders low, Effects medium, Detail High

Mac OS X 10.6.7 - 15-60 FPS, hovers around 25-35 (lows during heavy cinematic physics sequences, ending, etc. Not when you need to aim portals or react quickly)

Windows 7 Ultimate - 24-60 FPS, mostly 30-40 (same as above, nothing that really effects gameplay)

In summary, yes. Totally playable on a 9400M at 720p unless you're really picky. Since you're not using a gaming laptop I would assume not.
Have fun!

*I played through Portal 1 on a GMA950 (Most definitely under Windows, the OS X 950 drivers are miserable). Not saying it was ideal, but totally worth it considering it was my only computer at the time.

Yes Intel HD2000 is the built in graphics on sandy bridge core i3 desktops.

And also the non-K versions of the Sandybridge i5 and i7.

I wonder how long we'll have to wait for Portal 2 to be on sale?

What kind of sale ya looking for? They had 10% off preorder or 20% off two pack preorder which was what I did. $40 no tax for a new release game is terrific. There will inevitably be a sale but I don't expect one until maybe mid summer for probably 10-20% off during a summer special.

I have played portal 2 7 hours so far. white gel thingy in chapter 7. I guess this one has only two chambers. then back to the lab, test some kind of funnel tunnel in chapter 8? oh, damn wheatly. suddenly I feel like using too much brain. I get headache little bit. too much concentrated.

All the source games have been updated to at least the orange box engine.

well, finally I beat the game yesterday. I took 12 hours which I guess normal. not too faster, too slower. overall, it is really a good puzzle game. I love it. (well, every game is the same as you experience when you play it first time because you are not familiar with the whole environment or trick whatever) only thing is that I seemed to use my brain way too much. I got a headache twice before finishing it. it never happened when I played other. damn, Valve. I need a compensation of my brain damage!:p

the whole puzzle is very innovative, fun. story is very interesting even though there is no cake anymore. but in the end, entire turrets say 'goodbye' in end of game. they sing. adorable? when I ended up with cornfield, I was wondering what portal 3 will be. I don't think that we will see GLaDos anymore in portal 3 if Valve will make. I thought that GlaDos was human killing AI in first game. but in this sequel, she was kind of little friendly since I rescued her. then we made a friendship (?).

Glad you beat the game and everything, but SPOILER ALERT, man, SPOILER ALERT :mad::mad:

50%+ :)

I'll probably have to wait until the end of this year for Portal 2 to be reduced that much but I've plenty of other Steam purchases that I haven't played yet (or even installed).

For real almost spoiled it was reading and had to scroll away. Please no spoilers. Sucks I feel like I have to rush to beat the game to avoid this in a thread about how the game runs on a 9400m.
