One less device to carry. Currently I have a simple cell phone on my belt and an iPod Touch in my pocket. The iPad would be nice to replace pad-and-pencil for meeting notes as well as a larger screen for web surfing and such but I don't plan on taking it everywhere (that's what the Touch is for).

If you want a single device to carry, that can be a media tablet and a phone.. Ever consider that iPad isn't the right device?

Here's one device that can act like a small tablet and a phone.. and you won't have trouble fitting it into your pocket:

If you carry the iPad literally everywhere via messenger bag or whatever, you can use it as a phone. All you need is a great bluetooth and or bluetooth speaker and the voip account. However, I won't be doing this. It is still not user friendly for me. Sure, it would save you some money, but not enough for me. Plus, I like my iphone 3gs and will get the next one too. I have ordered an iPad, too. I think the next iphone will have ichat!! I think the next iphone will have a bigger screen, i.e. 5 inch.

Actually you can't. Since iPad won't support background processes, your VoIP app won't be able to receive any calls. So it can work as half the phone (outbound calls only), but even that will be highly cumbersome.

I'm not contradicting myself at all my friend.

I'm saying that you could use the iPad as some form of "phone" as a VOIP device at home perhaps. (none of which I want)...but my point is that most people have only 1 cell phone.

If you have 1 phone, it needs to be pocketable, very portable, usable without a headset or headphones...none of which fits the description of the iPad.

Sorry I don't mean to be offensive but that's a load of rubbish. 3 Uk allows skype over 3g meaning you add a nice bluetooth and use the ipad from your bag as a phone. You can have it in your car and connect it to the bluetooth hands free there. Lot's of people use skype and have skype phones and can reach you there. Plus you can get a number from skype for a small fee where anyone can call you as if calling a landline or mobilephone.

The whole point of the discussion is not if the ipad is the perfect portable phone replacement but if it can be used as a phone, and there are plenty of situations where it can be very effectively be used as one. Period.

Yeah, highly cumbersome: a skype app that already works perfectly on the iphone and a hands free or a bluetooth...what a load of rubbish...buddy take that to the engadget forums where the iq is below zero and where you can find some sympathetic ears...

Btw, as soon as iphone OS 4.0 which is just around the corner incorporates selective multitasking for apps such as skype, you 'll be very sadly disappointed.

Btw, aren't there rules here for spamming and selling wares in sigs? What the heck is wrong with the moderating in these forums. How can people be allowed to sell android in their sigs. If I go to a google forum and use a buy an iphone sig, they 'll kick me out as fast as lighting...

try holding a small pizza box up to the side of your head several times a day to find out.

I would say you can take iPad as an alternative of laptop, netbook, kindle, e-reader. But you can't expect it to also give you feature of phone because iPad is lacking at many stages. You cane understand what I am trying to say by reading it's complete review.

I think you didn't read the features of iPad. iPad is not supporting multitasking at all so you can't do what you are thinking to do.

Using the iPad with Skype as a phone replacement, as has been observed, would likely be prohibitively cumbersome.

However, if the iPad had a front facing camera with video VoIP features along with AT&T's unlimited $29.99 monthly plan I do think that many users may be inclined to ditch the iPhone in favor of this configuration. In this case, it wouldn't replace a dedicated cellphone but make the iPhone overkill. Many users might drop the costly iPhone data/voice plans, get a cheap cell phone, and use the iPad for video calls in combination with Googlevoice to call forward to the iPad when online.

I can only speculate what percent of users would take this path if available or what impact this might have on future iPhone sales.

For all your anger, maybe you should first learn some facts about Skype on iPhone.. First, Skype doesn't support BT headsets.. Second, it doesn't work over 3G (yes still). So as things stand today - Skype on iPad is limited to WiFi hotspots via wired headset. Yep, pretty cumbersome in my book.

Can you point me to an Apple press release indicating that iPhone OS 4.0 will support selective multitasking? Until 4.0 with multitasking is announced - this is just wishful thinking on your behalf.

The BT headset is a known bug, so to speak, apple has been working on resolving it, and so have skype.

As for multitasking, wait and see, and enjoy!:D

Okay, 3 cents worth. Build a neck brace and mount the iPad to it so you can video skype while driving. Since it will be hands free it should not violate any laws and it would be like having a passenger. Shouldn't bother anyone,
R-I-G-H-T???? Although I don't know about the seatbelt laws in this case. Ah, sarcasm, don't you just love it.

BTW, do I seem to be one of the few who actually use the iPhone as a cell phone? Yes I text, play songs, use the internet (only if I don't have a larger screen available) and have a number of apps but it's still a phone. If it were not a phone I would not have bought it.

What most of these posters don't get is that there have been claims of indications of coming multitasking in the OS all the way back to the original iPhone. There were claims in the original OS when updates were made, OS 2 and OS 3. People kept claiming items showed that multitasking was just around the corner. It's hasn't happened yet and we'll just have to wait and see for 4.
