Irrelevant. In what real life situation does HFS+ have files that are fragmented to such a degree that it makes a measurable difference?

You said that the defragged drive would be slower - which implies that you could measure the slowdown introduced by defragging.

Keep your fingers crossed...

Aside from the problem that I noted in my original post, I've had a bigger nagging problem ever since I got my nMP. I have a Drobo 5D and a second 2 disk enclosure set in JBOD mode. One of the disks in the 2 disk enclosure is dedicated to Carbon Copy Cloner which makes a nightly bootable backup of the Macintosh HD while the second 3TB NAS drive functions as my Time Machine drive. The TM drive backs up the Macintosh HD (on the nMP) and the iMovie, iTunes and iPhoto libraries on the Drobo. About every week or two in the middle of the backup process it just hangs. Each time this happens I've been able to fix the problem by first turing off TM, then deleting the .inprogress file, ejecting and powering down both the backup drive and the Drobo, bringing everything back on line and then turning on TM again. I have a sneaking suspicion that all this is related to the Drobo drives going to sleep and then when the TM backup kicks off, the drives don't wake up.

I'll be curious to see if by unchecking the Disk Drive Spindown option, I also solve the issue of the TM backup hangs?!?
