The auto-brightness on my SGS3 works the way I like. On my old HTC Desire Z, the auto-brightness was always too bright indoors, so I manually switch between 100% outdoors, 30% indoors and 9% in darkness.
100% all the time. I am using a Note 2 so battery drain is not much of a concern for me thanks to the oversized battery it is rocking. When I had my S3 I started out with Auto but then swapped over to 100% (The S3 screen is fairly dim compared to the S4 and the Note 2) and I noticed an immediate battery hit on that.
my phone's brightness is always full, i never push it down to save battery, and the good thing my phone still survives about 24-30 hrs on a single charge.
