Ok, so i was one of those people bashing the iphone battery a day or so ago because yesterday my battery was at 20% with only 2 hours of usage and 8 hours standby. I had everything off except 3G and Location Services. Today (after the 3 full drain then charge cycles) my battery is at probably 85% with 2 hours usage and about 6 hours standby. All i did was turn off Location Services. I guess it always stays connected or something but after turning that off when i dont need it my battery has improved dramatically, even with 3G on all the time. If this is old news then forget this post lol but i found it very helpful and maybe someone else will too

Thanks for the heads up, I have yet to read about this technique on battery saving. Therefore this was not a wasted thread because you helped a fellow member out. :D

I agree. Turning off location services made all the difference. I can now leave 3G and push turned on and the battery lasts almost as long as my 2G iPhone.

Is location services GPS included? So what happens if I go to Google Maps and click the "target" button? Exactly what are the location services?

yeah, how do you turn location services off?

settings-general, toggle switch on/off

But what does Location Services actually do? Is it just GPS, or does it do something else too?

It finds your location, via GPS, Cellular Triangulation, Skyhook (WiFi), whatever the phone can use to find your location. Its in 2.0 on 1st get phones too, so it's not just GPS.

What they need is an ON / OFF / STANDBY setting where if it is in standby and you click on locate me in maps, it turns on and starts with the triangulation, then narrows in via gps after it has locked on. Then maybe after a time period, turns back off.

I would hope this standby is the standard way it works. Unless you want tracking in Maps, why would it need to be on all the time?? And if its always connected, why does it take a few seconds to locate you when you ask it to.

+1

Reverts back to 'standby' when you leave the application.

I had an HTC TyTN2 (same as ATT Tilt). I had battery issues with it. Basically I had to charge it every night or every chance I got into my truck. No biggie, but there are tricks to saving it.

TUrn off the auto dim feature on your brightness, set your brightness down to the lowest level you like.

In my old Windows mobile phone, I had to be sure I turned off applications completely. Otherwise, they'd continue to run and draw power.

I'm unclear on the push versus fetch email. I thought push used more power, but now I'm hearing that fetch uses more power. I'll need to test it now.

Also, I only turn on 3G when I want to surf or have a big file to download. Otherwise, my call quality if the same either way.

I think that this has been mentioned or I think that I read it elsewhere but paid no attention to it...I will give it shot and see what happens...

yeah, I thought I read or heard somewhere that Steve said that the GPS was turned off unless an app requested access to it- i.e., Google Maps with the location finder. If it's constantly running all the time, then I wonder if maybe that's a bug? I really like the idea of my location-based apps and having my GPS data embedded into my photos, but for the sake of vastly improved battery life, it may be worth disabling most of the time...

how i helped MY battery life (a lot) was......i bought a car charger.

that's all it took amazingly. no need to disable features or cut back on features or stop using certain apps. nope, not here. i use 100% of my iphone 3g, 100% of the time and the battery never drops below 60%.

sweet!

i haven't noticed a huge drop in my battery life with location services on, but i just turned it off after reading this thread. i'm curious to see what happens.
