I have an office 365 subscription valid only for one installation (1 Mac, 1 iPhone and 1 iPad), so I'm using my old Office Mac:2011 on my Mac mini, primary for my son's homework.
It works just fine, a little slow (but the Mini doesn't help) but usable

I have a 2012 Mac Mini (i7 2.6GHz, 16GB Ram, 512SSD, El Capitan) currently running MS Office for Mac 2008 with some minor bugginess. AND I am shopping for a 2013 MB Air i5 1.3 GHz, 4GB Ram. Should I expect smooth performance with Office 2011 for Outlook and light Word/Excel usage with both machines? I have been using Entourage (home only use) forever. I have read of issues with Outlook w/exchange server. Is that something that is mandatory when I change from Entourage email/calendar to Outlook? I have access to web based email if I ever need that. I just need to sync my Mini's contacts and calendar to my Samsung S5. Will that become an issue?

Thanks,
Dave

On my MBP, WORD 2011 often crashes when trying to open files from within the program. When I double click on the file from the finder, it opens fine. But selecting the file from within WORD makes it crash sometimes--often enough to be annoying.

On my Mini, Entourage crashes each day or two. Minor annoyance. If MS Office 2011 still has similar glitches, I am not so motivated to spend $160 to get just a different set of glitches. Anyone else have comments how MS Office 2011 runs (Outlook, Excel & Word) on El Cap. & Yosemite?

Certain features are limited compared to Mac and Windows such as not being able to covert PowerPoint to MP4. Functionally, Mac is not exactly the same as Windows unfortunately.

The autosave and auto recovery feature doesn't actually 'autosave' but rather it behaves inconsistently so make sure you quadruple save your files - when Word crashes on Mac it doesn't register that it 'crashed' so it doesn't do the any of the recovery mechanisms, not that it should be a reliable in the first place. I've had nightmares about this.

My wife has a 5 license MS Office 365 license. I have not downloaded that to either my Mini or MBA for fear of adding issues when I convert to a non subscription version of MS Office. Should I not have any concern for lingering files confusing my Mac(s)?

PS. she is on Windows, but I believe it is for both platforms.

MS is good about issuing Updates, but terrible about letting it's users know about them. Office 2011 14.6.0 is now available. I found it by looking to see if it was issued. Even then it was tough to locate. It's here:

Good job finding that on MS' web page! I tried to search for it and lost that battle due to the company's strategy to "entice" users to pay for the subscription version of Office 365 - every link leads to another subscription page or a Windows version!
What search words did you use?

Thanks for letting us know!
I just did "Check for Updates" under "Help" menu on my Outlook (it can be done in any MS Office product, WORD, EXCEL, PP. etc.) to get the update.

^^^^Yes, that's an option, but I want the physical updater. I have two machines with seven drives that contain an OS and applications.

I just upgraded to El Capitan yesterday from Lion. I have Office 2011 on my iMac and had my fingers crossed that it would work Okay after the upgrade based on some issues others have had. I had the latest Microsoft update installed before the OS-X change.

Both Word and Excel seem to work perfectly after the upgrade (These are the only Office applications I use).

Now that I have an up-to-date OS I plan to see if I can transition my Word & Excel needs over to Pages and Numbers so that I won't need to install Office on future machines.

^^^^No new features Except:

  • Meeting invitations can now be accepted or declined when the sender's display name contains escape characters.
And MS states:
  • This update fixes critical issues and also helps to improve security. It includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code. For more information about this update, please visit the Microsoft Web site.

I have been noticing that Outlook has been beach balling a bit. It's not too bad (like 4-5 seconds) but has been occurring more lately. Granted Outlook is not my main mail app (I only use it for work), all my other email is done thru Apple Mail so it's not too big of a deal. Hope this new update fixes the beachball.

I use Office 2008 on both my iMac i5 and Mini i7 under El Capitan and it works fine, albeit opening is slow compared to 10.8x and 10.9x. I briefly ran 2011 and it too was slow opening and took a really long time to "rebuild" the font menu each time I opened it. I found I preferred 2008 performance and ditched 2011 after a HD crash that requiring restoring from a clone.

^^^^I agree with your comment on the rebuilding of the font menu, but as far as opening "slow" on my cMP, all Office 2011 applications open in less than 2 seconds for me.

I much prefer Office 2011 to Office 2008, but at this time I see no reason to update to Office 2016.
