How is the base MacBook Pro 14?

As a current/former 2015 owner (as well)... nothing.
Unless you're severely anti-notch but to be honest after using my 14" for the past few weeks... you forget it's there. Just move some of the menubar widgets to control centre....
The keyboard, the weight considering that was 6 years ago, the Apple Logo that lit up, maybe the shape, but that is a personal thing. Plus, it was built like an M1 Abrams Tank.
I returned mine after a week of use. Nice screen and like the black keyboard but battery life was half of my m1 13 pro. Didn't like the extra weight/bulkiness of it (I know it is thinner but bulkier to hold than the 13). The battery life was my biggest gripe with it though and main reason for returning. Don't need the extra ports - went for it mainly because need 16gb ram but may just hold on to what I have now and see what the next year's air and iPad Pro bring. Many people like the new 14 and 16 pro and I can see why but it wasn't for me.
Same as me. I bought a 13inch M1 MBP 2 months ago and it's been great coming from a 2017 MBP. Unfortunately, the touch-bar cracked out of nowhere so it's currently being repaired. To tide me through for work purposes i thought i'd pick up the base 14inch model to try out. I'll echo what you've said, keyboard brilliant, screens great, speakers great, but the battery life is nowhere near as good as the 13inch M1 MBP.
It's especially hard for me to justify as i have a decent gaming PC for the heavy stuff. The battery life on the M1 13 is just too damn good, and the 14 feels significantly chunkier to carry around.
Agreed, I forgot to mention the speakers are great but every time I turn them up my wife tells me off so I use headphones anyway.
I had (still do have) last years 13" M1 and loved it. I now have the 14" (1TB) and think it's a nice upgrade. The keyboard is great (but so is the M1's). The screen and speakers are a big improvement and of course the ports are a welcome addition. The only thing I miss about the M1, and I'm probably in the minority here, is the touch bar. I know a lot hated it but I loved it.
I came from the Late 2019 13 inch device with i5/8gb ram/256gb storage to base 14 inch device with m1 pro/16 gig ram/512 gig storage. Personally this feels like it came from another dimension.
I've always had performance problems with the 2019 device, it always struggled with even basic tasks, it wasn't anything that work-breaking but it was annoying from time to time. m1 device is buttery smooth and breezes through any and all tasks easily. My main work flow is fairly light since I am an attorney however, I really do enjoy a device that does not have any hiccups. That being said, for my workflow I believe even an m1 air would be more than enough.
The screen quality is phenomenal, the mini led display is Wonderful for dark mode in general and 120hz display is much, much smoother than the old display, which was an important motivation for me to pick this up instead of an m1 air or regular m1 pro.
I/O is another great advantage even though I was fine with 2 usb-c ports almost 99% of the time, its great to have a dedicated charge and hdmi port.
I am one of the few people who enjoyed the scissor switch in the previous MacBooks and had no reliability issues with the keyboard. I liked the shallow but consistent travel. That being said, this keyboard is also amazing especially compared to the company-issued Lenovo Thinkbook.
I also kinda miss Touch Bar since it changing itself depending on the situation was a great ease of use for me however it looks like no one does like it and I can get used to it.
Generally I am amazed that this product was made by apple since they don't back down from their decisions however, I believe I will be able to fully and happily use this device +5 years. I didn't think the 2019 MBP would even make 2 years.
If your budget allows this device buy it. The screen and performance alone is mesmerizing.

Yeah the battery is not as good as the M1 Pro, it's more in line with the Air in terms of the battery usage during workload.
I'm quite happy about my M1 Pro after upgrading from an M1 Air (temporary laptop until I sold the i9 16")
