Having a blast but I miss the following:

Tab Key (instead of previous/next)
Open Apple Key (Open Apple+F-C-V)
Arrow Keys

When you have Mastered Keyboard commands like myself, you would understand my gripe.

I'm actuallt posting form my ipad right not. And I love typing on it. I also love how auto-corectionbfixes all my midtakes. Its marvrlous.

WIN POST.

I tried the iPad out at the Apple Store, and the typing is actually pretty easy.

I was in line to buy one on day one so I didn't get to try one first. When I got mine, I was "satisfied" with the typing and had a similar impression to you (DL)*DARK*. However, when I was in a meeting and trying to keep up with speech, I realized that the landscape keyboard wasn't working well enough for me when I was in a hurry. It's ok when I've got plenty of time on my hands, but I'd rather have a bluetooth keyboard to type faster.

The biggest issue I run into is unused fingers touching the display resulting in a lot of aaaaaaaaaaaa and ppppppppp in the middle of what I'm typing. I hope Apple allows some third party keyboard apps or some different options for the built in keyboards. I'd rather have a one hand keyboard when in landscape because frequently I'm holding the iPad with one hand and pecking with the other hand. A keyboard that takes up so much of the screen and requires such large movements to type makes no sense in this scenario.

I do feel like I'm getting better at typing, but I'm not there yet. I would not advise anyone to avoid buying the iPad over the on screen keyboard usability, but I would caution them not to believe that it's easy to get used to either. I should mention that I was using typewriters long before there were home computers so YMMV, but as a touch typist the iPad keyboard has been somewhat frustrating for me.

At first it was more challenging for me. Now, I type at a nice speed in either mode. Works just fine for what I need to do.
:apple:

I would pay an extra $20 for arrow keys though. How that was missed is beyond me. Sometimes it's a hassle to touch in the right spot.

I read somewhere of an overlay that goes on top of the onscreen kb to simulate the feel of real keys. I wonder if this would be an improvement to the non-feel touch screen kb?

In landscape with the apple case propping it up a bit I can type decent without too many mistakes. Better than I thought it would be.

I love my iPad, but let's not kid ourselves, typing on this device will never be much more than "adequate."

So, I bought the bluetooth keyboard for use when I want to do long form typing, and I love using it. I spent three hours on Sunday working on my book while sitting at a cafe, and it was wonderful.

what genre?

I finally decided to start putting keyboard to screen on a sci-fi book idea I've had for years by using the Notes function in my iPhone.

I found that lounging is more relaxing and using the iPhone in that setup is much more comfortable than the laptop.
Sitting at a desktop is boring and reminds me of work anyway.

But it is certainly not ideal and I'm looking forward to continuing and finishing on my iPad.

My book is a fictionalized biography; a historical novel with a twist.

Some will say "why not just use a laptop?" Well…a couple of points…

1) The combination of the iPad and Keyboard is smaller and lighter than my 12" powerbook.

2) The battery lasts significantly longer

3) A lot of my writing process includes reading and research, and the ability to just grab the device and read long articles (I LOVE Instapaper and GoodReader) along with having a library of historical books in iBook makes this device a great companion to the process of writing.

4) The iPad give me the option of leaving the keyboard at home (which I mostly do) or taking it with me, and my laptop doesn't give me that option.

Right now, I'm using Pages to write in.

my line of thinking as well.

and I was hoping Pages would be just the right app :D

I keep hitting n when I mean to hit the damn spacenbar. Dammit!

+1 haha

I actually look FORWARD to replying to emails on my iPad because I get a silly kick out of it. I'm about 90% of the speed I am with my iMac which is a welcomed improvement over my about 10% speed on the iPhone.

Would LOVE some cursor keys however. Bottom line is I don't do a TON of typing on it outside of email, URLs, logging into online banking, and in Numbers so the landscape keyboard is more than adequate for me. Certainly hasn't been worth the trouble (for me) to pair up my BT keyboard.

I have relatively large hands, but I was nonetheless surprised at how instantly proficient I was in portrait mode with my two thumbs. Basically just an extension of how I type on the iPhone.

Hijacked a wifi model for a weekend jaunt to LA and was pretty happy with that aspect.

Still got the dock and a BT keyboard though for any real productivity needs.

3G can't come soon enough :D

I love typing on my iPad, but one this that bugs me is that I hit the V key a lot when I go to hit the space bar, oh well just gotta retrain myself.

Yeah, it's weird, for me it's m. UnlessmI'mcareful,mamlotmofmmysentances,lookmlikemthis.

Damn that's one long word. I'm trying to train my finger to go lower on the keyboard when I have to hit the spacebar.

Holy **** its working. Only took 12.5 minutes to type this response.

I've started to type without look at the keyboard, and my speed is fairly decent. But when I'm doing long winded essays then I use my wireless keyboard.

I was an early complainer. It's gotten better and my speed is "okay", but nowhere near my speed on a real keyboard. I'm a very fast touch typist and I think there are too many years of muscle memory to overcome.
