How long before 1.1.2 is broken?

I'll be buying my UK iPhone on Friday, but there is no way in hell that I'm going on contract, I never have and I never will.

So, this means I'll have to sit with an iPhone that does nothing but emergency calls, until the new firmware is broken.

Now, I don't know how much about all this sort of stuff. But I don't think anybody's going to know really, until we get our hands on the firmware, but does anybody care to hazard a guess how long it'll take before I can unlock my iPhone?
 
Just quick thought...

I would buy iPhone when the jailbreak for 1.1.2 is available otherwise sitting in front of useless iPhone will killing me.
 
Can you still sign-up and then cancel your contract before it's too late (to cancel)? How much time do you have - 14 days? 30 days??

Yeah but I've been waiting for this date for so, so long. Not getting an iPhone when I know I could, would kill me more.
 
I would say 3 week tops. It took about 1 month to get 3rd apps going. About 2 weeks to get 1.1.1 hacked. There will be no problem hacking 1.1.2, if you think about apple has about 100 people working on this. The hacking community has people all over the world working on it. It will be hacked don't worry about it.

1.1.2 may NEVER be hacked for all you know. You're going to buy and iPhone and even OPEN it before having any idea if you can use it? Come on now. Head on shoulders.

What's so bad about a contract with O2? I'm asking because I have no idea.

FWIW: I have no contract here either.....and with ATT......its called PREPAID baby and it doesn't get any better.

Not everyone wants to bend over and use att/o2/whatever just to use an iPhone. Other carriers actually have reasonable tariffs/plans mind you.

What actually strikes me as odd is the fact that you pay 400 euros for the phone then have a 2-year contract, yet you can't use your OWN sim card.

Do you know how many people posted your exact same comment when 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 was released?.

There is nothing such as NEVER be hacked. Trust me. It might take a bit longer yes, but it will be hacked eventually. If you have ever had a chance to chat with people on the elite-team you will change your mind. These are not some script kiddies fooling around, many of them are actually extremely talented hardware/software engineers that do assembly, security and whatnot for living.
 
It will be hacked, there's no question about it.

I hope its long before mid-December, so I can buy one to go travelling with!

I'll need a different sim card each time I move country. ;)

Other than the fact that I hate having some looming worry over how much money I'm spending when using my phone?
Well, I'm only 19, and I'm in college, with a part-time job, so I don't make very much money at all. I've had to scrounge for enough to just buy the iPhone. I'll be hard pushed to pay for the contract each month, be it only £35.

Plus, I'm on Pay As You Go, I always have been since I've had a mobile. I get by with just topping a £20 on it every so often, and using it til it runs out. It's worked for me many many years, and I'm not going to just jump ship and get a contract for the first time.
 
Apple will do their best to make hacks impossible. Hackers will do their best to make sure it gets hacked. The saving grace is that in February, Apple will open the iPhone to third party developers. That means there will be a legitimate (non hacked) way into the iPhone that someone other than Apple will know.

While adding third party apps is one of nicest things to enhance the iPhone, anyone who wants an iPhone but says they'll wait until 1.1.2 is jailbroken, probably can't afford the iPhone yet. Even without hacks, it's the best phone around.
 
If i get an iPhone on Friday, do you think that you will be able to downgrade to 1.1.1 and unlock that and then upgrade back to 1.1.2 when they have jailbreaked that?

I was thinking that, but I know crap all about that sort of thing. I just assumed they prevented a downgrade somehow.

Can anyone shed some light on it?

I don't see why not. If nothing else, you can follow those old instructions for going back to 1.0.2 and then to 1.1.1 if that's the level you desire. I know I won't be applying 1.1.2 when it comes out stateside, I don't see anything worth my while, so I'll wait for it to be hacked, and continue using mine instead of staring at it.

But yeah, your impatience is beyond me. And I'm totally impatient. To each their own though, I'm not going to judge you too badly for it :)
 
Also, do you think that there is any way that Apple can track if you aren't using the 02 Contract?

You'll really need to wait until 1.1.2 is out in the US for us to play with it to see if the firmware can be downgraded, or else wait for someone in Europe to try the downgrade process on 1.1.2 and post the results.
 
If you don't want to downgrade, it'll be a while because apple fixed the TIFF exploit (the basis of the current 1.1.1 jailbreak) so a whole new way of jailbreaking will have to be figured out.
 
I was thinking though, since these hackers also figured out how to fix the TIFF exploit do you think they will be able to "unfix" or reverse it so it works again? Or is it more complicated than that?
 
I think it's more complicated than that. The TIFF exploit allowed them to walk through an open door and do what they needed to, then they closed the door behind them.

Now that Apple have that door closed, they'll have to find another open door to walk through. Or bash it down with a sledgehammer :p
 
I'm hopeful they can get it hacked soon. They are smart guys/gals and it's a challenge. I'd love to help if I even knew where to start. It will be sad to stare at the iPhone and not be able to do anything with it though!
 
I have been waiting for so long for the iPhone and I have got to get one on Friday! Do you think that I should wait until 1.1.2 has been broken or just get one and try everything because shorly there is going to be a way around?

I need to make a decision quickly!!

What do any of you guys think...
