I had my iPhone 5S for 5 years. I plan on having my 8 for at least another 2 or 3. Like iPads, I upgrade them when they're either no longer supported or they're so slow I can't take it anymore.

I'm still rocking a 6S but thinking of upgrading this year to what will become last gen model once the new ones are announced.

I usually am on a two year cycle but, unless the new iPhone completely floors me at the release event I’ll be keeping my X for another year.

This.

2 year cycles are good (I usually skip S cycles) but it appears nowadays Apple is sticking on "SS" cycles where major changes don't occur until the 4th release (6>6S>7>X) and (X>XS>XI>XII). This year's XI is basically an XS with an extra camera.

I used to upgrade every 2 years. This is the first time I've kept my 7 Plus for 3 years. I may hold on to it for a 4th year depending on what's offered with the new model(s).

My first iOS device (iPod touch 4th gen) i only had for 11 months. (Mainly because of lack of support for iOS 7)

The iPhone 5s i had for 2 years and 3 months

iPhone 6s for 3 years

And currently i have the 8 Plus... i also want to get atleast 3 years out of it. These things are expensive.

I upgraded every year between 5 and 6S, skipped the 7 because the 6S Plus was good enough. Got the 8 Plus because it was the last version of that form factor and went to a Note 9 last year just to see what’s up with android, skipping the Xs. I’ll be looking closely at the 11 Pro this year since I would like to go back to OLED and I really enjoyed the swipe gestures that were added to the Note 9 with Android 9. So basically every 2ish years for me now.

Spending $1000+ every year on a phone seems crazy.

If you stay just a generation behind that annual price will probably be cut in half.

I look forward to all of the flushed toilet money when I get my next new iPhone for a discount caused by the iPhone 11 rage.

I upgrade every year.

I don’t pay full retail. I trade in my previous year’s phone, and given the high resale value of a pristine iPhone, the cost of upgrading every year isn’t that bad.

I have had my SE for two years and have no need to upgrade yet. It works fine and fits into any pocket. Without a glass back it is very sturdy and it is in an inexpensive silicone case (covers the back only). I have dropped it quite a few times (sometimes screen down, sometimes back down) with no ill effect whatsoever.

Let me tell you, I Purchased the SE when it launched in March 2016, I sold it about a year later, as I retired as my previous ‘work phone’, and I regret selling it. I know I could still find one potentially slightly used on the web, but I’m just going to hold off until the new purported 5.4 inch iPhone eventually launches in 2020. Still though, the SE was and is an outstanding little phone.

It's always been 2 years for me. That may change this year, depending on what gets announced next week. There is about a 60/40 chance I end up hanging onto my launch day iPhone X for another year (but get a new battery for it).

I used to upgrade either every 1 or 2 years, went from OG iPhone, 3GS, 4S, 5, 6, 6S. I’m now going on 4 years with the 6S and will probably go at least 5 based on the 11 rumors. The phones of the past few years don’t have anything I need or want to justify an upgrade plus my 6S has a fresh battery, works perfectly and has a headphone jack.

I usually wait until my phone dies. There hasn't been a new Apple feature that's completely floored me to the point where I was compelled to get it right away. Heck, they last so long these days.

It used to be every two years following Apple’s two year cycle (4 to 5 to 6), but now it looks like I’m moving to Apple’s three year plan (6 to X to 2020).

I have never upgraded my phone; I keep them until they break. My first iPhone was a 5S which I kept until it broke, then got an SE.

My financial situation allows me to allocate about 50 cents a day for a phone, so I have to keep my devices between 4 - 5 years, depending on the storage level I get. Any battery replacements or AC copays push out the expected end-of-life even further.
