The iPad Air 2 is already exhibiting this phenomenon ;)
Really? Keyboard lagging? Already? Wow. I have an iPhone 5c on iOS 9 that isn't that fast (I'm used to non-updated devices) but the one thing it doesn't lag is the keyboard.

No I meant in the since that it’s smooth with no notable slowdown on iOS 11 and iOS 12 is only improving that.

Misunderstood your post. Apologies. The Air 2 was touted as the future-proof device when it came up. It really lived up to that claim. I can testify: I tried an Air 2 on iOS 11 and it was fast, but I didn't try the keyboard. That's why I was surprised.

People always say the same crap after a new iPad is released. "The iPad 4 has the new A6X and they bumped up the RAM from 512MB to 1GB. It will easily last you for 5 years until 2017". Meanwhile those same people probably already upgraded their iPads multiple times in between 2012 and today.

Forget all specs, general rule of thumb is first 2 years will have lightning performance, the 3rd year will have good performance, the 4th year will be usable but you'll want to upgrade, and by the 5th year you will be begging to upgrade.

Unless u got the iPad 3 like me for $829 lte version. The iPad 3 was slow as heck after 2 years. Simply not usable (for my taste)

I also think the iPad 2 (2011) (new duo core) which had good performance for 4 years. And iPad Air 2 (tri core and new 2gb ram) were the exceptions in terms of true real time longevity.

The iPad Pro 9.7 2gb ram A9X (released March 2016) will likely not have 4 years of true good real time performance. I think that iPad has a 3 year life self.

The iPad Pro 12.9 (November 2015 release) with A9x and 4gb ram will have true 4 years real time performance.

Same with iPad Pro 10.5/12.9 (June 2017 release) A10x/4gb ram will have 4 years performance

Saying that. My current lineup in my house is
iPad Air 2 lte 64gb, iPad (2017) A9 128gb WiFi, iPad Pro 9.7 32gb lte, and iPad Pro 10.5 (64gb wifi)

I will replace the iPad Air 2 lte this fall when it’s 4 years old. I may pick up a 32gb iPad WiFi (2018) A10 budget model for around $250 when they are on sale. U can get them for $289 at Costco right now for the A10 iPad budget model 32gb

I’ve just gotten very selective when buying iPads. I only buy when on sale. My Work gives me the lte iPads for free as well.

The iPad 2 may have been supported for a long time but performance was bad by year 3 (iOS 7) and pretty awful by year 4 (iOS 8). The Air with its measly 1GB RAM has become laggy but not as bad as the A5-based devices by year 4.

As for the Pro 9.7, I expect it'll be fine even by year 4. That'll be year 3 for the A9 iPad (2017) and year 2 for the A10 iPad (2018) both with 2GB RAM. I don't believe those two iPads (the latter especially) will run awfully that quickly.
