You shouldn't worry. I'm running a first gen 17" iMac G5 from 2004. Heavy usage, usually 12+ hours on my boring days at home...

It's my primary computer. Today it looks as new as the day I bought it and it works like a charm. ;)

Hey there, i have a Core Duo iMac back from 2006 too. I was wondering if there are any services out there that would replace the Core Duo chip for one of the new Core 2 Duo chips. I remember a company called Daystar i think that upgrades the old G4 chips, so im wondering if there is anyone out there that knows of such a company to do this. Thanks in advance.

You can do this by hand if you want. You don't need any special CPU though. A standard Core 2 Duo designed for laptops will work. Socket 479 (or 478) i think. There are probably some apple resellers or repair centers who will do this if you supply the CPU.

That's all apple did when it upgraded to the faster versions (before santa rosa).

You'll be able to stick the max of 2.33 GHz in there with no hassle.

How long would a iMac Intel Core Duo from 2006 with 17" 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo last working? if i spent everyday 2 hours on it? Does someone have experience with other mac computers??

I know quite a few people who have had logic board failures in all iMacs starting with the G3. Most likely it is from heat in tight quarters. The new iMac is a beauty, but I want a computer that will live for more than 2-3 years without Apple maintenance, so I will have to pass on it.

My Apple Blue and White G3 towers keep right on going and going. My 400 mhz has a new 120 GB and a 40 GB hard drive and a new DVDRWCDRW drive & loaded with memory, all installed by me. My 350 mhz B & W tower has a new 40 GB HD and the original CDROM drive. When I need speed to watch a TV show on computer, I turn to my Compaq with a 2.41 Ghz Athlon 64 processor. Even though OSX is superior to Windows XP, I can still use XP. I would not touch VISTA for any reason.

and when let's say 10.6 comes out, how big is the chance that it will be full 64bit ?without 32 bit feedback

Besides what else has been said, a 2006 Core Duo will still run 10.4 and 10.5. You don't actually need to upgrade the OS 10 seconds after the next version comes out. Then the question is, Will I still be able to network this with a current computer? Pretty sure that will be a yes.
